We lost our 15 year old daughter a little over two years ago. As a man who trusts in Christ, I can't imagine surviving the loss if I wasn't sure that God is in control and that while I don't understand it all fully, His plan is perfect and brings Him glory and is for my ultimate good. If I for one second thought that God was not sovereign over even these things, I would lose my mind because then nothing in life would have purpose or matter.

I don't understand why children pass away, especially from long illnesses. Heartbreaking.

Same here, that's an inspiration

jwall3, I am happy that your Faith has gotten you through your tragedy. I would like to think that mine would do the same for me, but I really do not know this. Best to you and yours. God Bless.

I will tell you what the answer isn't: It was all part of God's plan. Had one of my best friends get killed by a drunk driver in broad daylight when he was 14 (and note since he was the sheriff's nephew, he got off). He and his parents were Southern Baptist, and I won't ever forget at the visitation hearing this over and over again from old ladies: This was all part of God's plan. I know they mean well, but for me, that would be pretty much the single worst thing that you could tell me that God is cruel, wants me to suffer for really no reason, and stripped me of my own flesh and blood just because he "planned it". I hope to God this never happens to me, but if I lose a child in an untimely death, anyone who tells that to me will be asked to leave and to stay away from me and my family for the rest of my life.

It seems like dealing with a loss like this would be infinitely more difficult to process if you were/are religious.

Don't ever say that at a funeral. Trust me when I say that many people think of that as simply a 10/10 on the offensive level. It's just saying a benevolent God/monster murdered your child, simply accept it, and then get over it since he's in a better place with this thing that took your child from you.

I agree. What kind of God takes away sweet, innocent children, and leaves rapists and murders?

I don't agree with the "god has a plan" speech
I think we have become spoiled by the great medical tech we have.
My great grandfather had 5 siblings to die way back. They all died from some sort of sickness. My GP was the youngest. They moved from Mizzou to Louisiana thereafter. He then had his own family of 5 kids. The rest is history

Believing there is an afterlife and our time here is miniscule, no matter how long it is, would help a religious person IMO. But I haven't been in that position.

My sister lost a week old baby. On one hand I think that is easier than losing an older child. My grandparents lost a child at 12 or so to cancer and it still affects them greatly even 50 years later. I can't even imagine how you begin to comprehend that as a parent.

My cousin was killed at 24 in a car crash. His dad hasn't been the same since. This was in 07.

No doubt there have been long nights in the valley. Our daughter suffered from a disabling disease her whole life and the diagnosis was always that 13 years was the life expectancy. 15 years was a blessing but also not near enough. I don't mean to pass off the experience with my faith as easy. It is certainly a painful struggle and as others have noted, it leaves scars for the rest of our time here. But my faith in God allows me to put it in this perspective: I exist to serve God and bring him glory. This life is not about me. It's about Him. There is a great song I recently heard that sums it up called "as long as you are glorified." It says shall I love God in times of plenty but not in days of drought. Is he not God in both the good and bad times? I can accept what comes as long as He is glorified. Our daughter loved the Lord and I know that I am but a pilgrim here. I will see her again.
