re: Why aren't college sports looked at like an internship?

Just remember
There are over 400,000 NCAA student-athletes, and most of us will go pro in something other than sports.

I've actually compared it to an internship before when this discussion comes up.
If your dream is to be a big time sports broadcaster you aren't going to complain if ESPN offers you an internship because it's unpaid

The NCAA has no bearing on if kids go to college. Take it up with the NFL and NBA for setting min age limits.

Basketball: Are college players doing some kind of direct work for the NBA before they are eligible for the draft?
Etc.
Doesn't matter. Many students intern at small companies in the industry they wish to pursue and then hope to be signed onto the bigger companies after graduating, using the experienced they gained on a more amateur level to get their foot in the door.

Very few college athletes actually generate revenue. the Bregmans, Fournettes of the world do. Everyone else is just needed to complete the team.
I dont watch LSU because of Bregs or LF7 either.

Me as an intern nobody gives a shite about. People pay lots of money to see these guys do their craft.
Apples and Oranges. Nobody paying to watch me make copies or get coffee.
I dont understand people that think they shouldnt get paid

Most college athletes in FB and BB, will never make it to the "paid job" level in their sport. Most of them also don't value the free (or greatly reduced price) education that is being handed to them. They just want money and they want it now.

Advocates for paying college players say that they are taken advantage of and the colleges profit off of them. How is that different from people who intern for free? They make money for the company too. The reason people start out as interns is to pay their dues and gain experience to build their resume. Why isn't college looked at the same way?

How much revenue does the average intern generate for his organization compared with the average college football athlete at a major program?
Think about what you just said. How much revenue does the average football athlete generate? I have no idea, and it's probably impossible to quantify but I would guess it's less than people think.

In a way they are. By playing in college they are increasing their marketability for their future pro team. Evidence of this is jersey sales for newly drafted players that have yet to play a minute of pro ball.

But as a whole they generate all the money because they are the workforce. Not the same in the business world.

Exactly. But the third string left tackle doesn't put asses in the seats. 90% of the fans in the seats don't even know his name, so how much should you pay him?

That's also true in the NFL. Just because his value is low doesn't mean he has no value.

For some reason I was under the impression many believed if players were to be paid, it would be like a stipend divided equally amongst the players equally. I guess no one knows really.

I wouldn't expect a football player at Toledo to paid like one at OSU.

Well I know that. I was just saying, players on the same team, how would the money be divided up? But no one knows at this point. Or maybe they do. I haven't really followed the whole players being paid thing.

Just let them get paid for their name. Let them have shoe deals, get paid for appearances, autographs, etc. Then each player is paid according to their worth.

This I agree with. I don't like the idea of the student athletes getting paid money by the university they play for. They get paid through scholarships. I think they should be able to capitalize on the value of their name through autographs, etc. though.
