re: Are LSU fans unreasonable or do they have the right expectations?

If LSU wentry 0-2 in Omaha, 12-1 in football (losing playoff,) and out in first round of march madness is that a good year or bad year?
It will all depend on expectations for the respective teams.

They got to all three playoff games. I'd say in a sense that is a success. I'd also argue we are quite spoiled as fans, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Our expectation levels are always so high, considering the fact we have always been very good in football and baseball for a while now.

Of course you should be dissapointed, but at the same time, having a good season, ex 10-11 wins in football for 5-6 straight years, should have you pretty damn happy. You shouldn't still be bitter months and years later.
We were just discussing this the other day on SECrant. Some of the greatest coaches of the last 50 years went nearly two decades at their schools before winning a national championship. Actually, I'll just post what JStanDawgFan did:
Another problem (football) is expecting national championships every other year. Seems like seeing what Meyer did in his four years at UF and what Saban is doing, is clouding many LSU minds. When you have people getting pissed at 10 win seasons, or just pushing em aside like they were just as easy as a 7 win season, then you have problems.

To illustrate my point more succinctly, I will list; according to that line of thinking, coaches that should have been fired from their schools before their National Title came. Next to each coach is the amount of years it took for each one to breakthrough...
Tom Osborne -22 years
Joe Paterno - 17 years
Bear Bryant - 17 years
Bobby Bowden - 17 years
Lou Holtz -17 years
Vince Dooley - 17 years
Mack Brown - 22 years
Bo Schembechler - Never

No they aren't. People on message boards tend to be much more negative, critical, and ridiculous than they are in real life because of the anonymity aspect

LSU fans will NEVER be happy. PERIOD. They love being miserable

That meme of the rant being negative is pushed all the time by the pumpers.
They work for LSU AD and they are paid to keep the brand image looking good at all times.

Anyone who thinks the rant and reality are anywhere close to the same was either born within the past 20 years or needs to spend more time with real people (and I don't mean while texting or browsing the web). Just saying.

With the many millions we are paying our staff, with the talent we have on campus, the expectations should be high!

It seems in the big 3 LSU has a win or it wasn't worth it mentality.
Several know a good season even if it falls short of the ultimate goal but they still complain.
Should LSU be disappointed when they fall short of a National Championship or is a 50 win season in baseball, NCAA tourney appearence, bowl game good enough for fans?
If LSU wentry 0-2 in Omaha, 12-1 in football (losing playoff,) and out in first round of march madness is that a good year or bad year?
For me it is both, I would be proud of accomplishments of the team but would feel they fell short. Especially football and baseball where we recruit the best of the best and should realistically have a bottom line of the playoffs.
I think we forget in this age of twitter, message boards etc., that most fans are very reasonable and understand that a good season does not always end with a championship. Many just was a few hours of entertainment.
The pyschos on these message boards (myself included) are not reflective of most fans.

10 wins is always a good season for LSU football.

This is so true....They come on here running their mouth knowing that if they stay in the shadows they are ok......

quote:I tend to agree as many probably do after having a chance to step back and reflect. Part of the issue, however, has been the way in which seasons have ended, not just the final results or overall record. For instance Houston/Stony Brook in baseball, Bama rematch and other piss poor performances in football bowl games, complete meltdown in first game back to March Madness. Those are the things that are harder to let go and seem to build on themselves.

No one likes to lose or see their team lose, but after the dust settles, some are easier to accept as part of a successful season than others.

The only fans that matter for the coach are the ones paying lots of money. I don't think they are as bad as rantards but I do feel like Miles seat is starting to get hot. The great recruiting classes are good and all but since 2011 LSU football just doesn't seem to be the same. Personally I think we will be great in 2016 and maybe this year too. This upcoming recruiting class is going to be one of the best. I say Miles gets a pass if he wins 8 or 9 games this year but if he can't win 10 in 2016 he is gone. Miles may start reading the signs and just retire before it gets to bad.
Note: I'm as bad as a positiger you will find in the rant.

Johnny Jones must have a good year this year which I think he will.
Paul is in absolutely no danger of losing his job I think he retires here won't get fired.

It's hard to say. I wouldn't have been happy with 8-5 in football no matter how it shook out. But it's a bit more understandable had they lost the other 3 regular season games in a similar fashion to how they lost to Bama.
It's unacceptable to get shellacked they way they did against MSU, Auburn, and Arky. They were only competitive for about the last quarter of the MSU game.
For baseball the problem becomes what is considered the norm. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect to be in Omaha more than not. To this point that's what LSU Baseball does. But when they make a quick exit, the season just becomes one of many good to great seasons. It's hard not to be spoiled.

I think it's a reasonable goal to win the SEC. Saying that, I understand that the SEC West is loaded, and there are teams who get on a role who can win it. Once you win the West the rest takes care of itself.
As far as other sports....
Getting to Omaha and not going 0-2
Getting into the NCAA tourney
Both are great. Any other sport that does anything positive is fun to hear about, but I really don't care.
