My GSD will often talk to me to get my attention, then prance around the perimeter of my house barking to show he can protect me.

my goldendoodle does this, he's not two years old yet. if i'm wandering the house, he'll try to hold his head against the outside of my leg as i walk.

My 3.5 yo Boykin is the same way.

He's not sick or old or anything; just wants to be nearby as often as possible

My pug has done this since he was a puppy. They are Velcro dogs (pugs). If you leave the bathroom door open while you shower you will see a lil pug nose peek around the shower curtain

Especially normal for a lab, regardless of age.

My border Collie will walk thru the house making sure everybody is in their right place then go lay on her bed for a bit before checking on her people again until it's bedtime then she comes into my room and lays next to the bed by the door. I dare you to open said door

Same experience with mine. He always acted that way, but once he got older it was worse.

We have an old family picture of my grandmother or one of her siblings as an infant, lying on a quilt on the ground. Next to the quilt is a dog that looks like a border collie. My great grandmother would put the baby down on the quilt and go on about her business while the dog kept the baby on the quilt.

the dog might be going blind

the SO's dog did this in his last few years as his vision went bad.

he would either be real close to one of us or the cat would help lead him around the house.

One of my boys constantly does this already, and he's a 3yo Malinois.

I think she wants to be closer to you in her last days, just don't let her out of your sight, she might run off to die alone.

My border collie only showed any herding instinct once, when he was playing with kids at the barn and they scattered. he was a follow around lap dog otherwise. Would even lay down next to the tub when I took a bath.

My new guy is a mutt of unknown origin who was a stray. He also follows me everywhere. He's a little more obsessive though, and will only eat when I'm in the kitchen with him.

Sounds normal to me. We have 2 beagles. The oldest is 13. He follows us to every room. The younger one is 6. He used to stay to himself. Now he sits on the ottoman when I am in my chair.

Your girl is probably fine. What this guy is describing with his sick dog spending more time alone is more typical of a sick dog. In a dog pack, sick or injured dogs are usually driven out of the pack. Sounds cruel, and I guess it is, but a pack leader does what is best for the welfare of the pack as a whole. Dogs will often instinctually hide pain and injury from their pack leader to avoid being spurned.
