When the housing market crashed the Houston market remained very stable because of the oil industry. Keep in mind that Exxon is moving their headquarters to Houston, which has driven up prices all over the area.

Now that the price of oil has dipped things have slowed down but certainly have not stalled. Houston(outside the loop) has long been 1 of cheapest cities in the US to buy a home, when factoring square feet.

When I moved to Houston the house I bought was the same the price that I sold my house for BUT I got 1000 more square feet in Houston.

I don't see it happening. Seems like a pipe dream. The article I read said that it plans to be self-sustaining on rainwater...Do they not know that we've had little rain the past 8 years?

I can't see why anyone would choose Houston over Dallas.

Why?

Somebody give me a few weeks heads up before the bubble burst. I moved to Round Rock 8 years ago and bought a house with 2600 sq ft on short sale for a little over 210,000. Just had a real estate person tell me they would list it for around 285,000 to 290,000 now.

Problem is there is no where to move in this city since all the real estate is over valued.

How's Dallas real estate these days? Overvalued like Houston and Austin? Heck I'm even thinking of moving to San Antonio but it seems over valued as well.

Meh. Unless I have a big family, that's just more $$$ to me. You have to buy more shite to fill that space up. You have to spend more to keep it cool/warm, lights on, etc.

I know the housing prices in Uptown especially around Greenville have shot through the roof the last 4 years. Frisco is very overpriced.

The amazing thing about those numbers is this: There's a ton of new construction in the outlying areas of both cities, and yet, the appreciation is still hitting that high.

Back roads are a MUST here. If you can find a good route, then it makes things so much easier.

That is, until your back road gets flooded...

that in itself is amazing. Austin's Condo growth is going crazy. I don't even recognize parts of South Lamar or Burnet Road.

Damn, I wish our houses were "overvalued" that low. You can't buy an 1100 sq ft fixer upper for that median house price.

Sucks, I guess the days of cheap housing in Texas we all used to know are over. At least it's not like Cali yet.

I can live anywhere in the state for my job but prefer bigger cities. I choose Austin because of quality of life. I like my house but I'm ready to upgrade but it doesn't seem like there is anything anywhere that doesn't seem to be overvalued.

Eh, it's a pretty great place and there is a reason why it's one of the fastest growing cities in the country. But I agree that the cost of living doesn't really add up. Wages need to increase a ton to balance things out.

Austin is cool but let's be honest, it's treated as an outdoor mecca by some when it really isn't. It's kind of fabricated in that regard.

I like the bar and restaurant scene and it is undoubtedly progressive for Texas, but it obviously lacks the natural splendor to really justify some of the valuation put on Austin. I won't say it is Phoenix or Vegas or Orlando, but I just don't think there is anything to prop those values up long term.

I view Austin as sort of a combination of Ashville and Dallas/Houston, where you have this progressive, collegiate, outdoors culture matched up with a considerable business town. But you sort of lack the authenticity of either portion, resulting in what I think is way too much hype and not enough structure to support it.
