Lange is unquestionably the best freshman pitcher in LSU history.
He did this in an era of big time offense.
Lange may be better, but it's ridiculous to say "unquestionably" the best

Matty Ott as a freshman was absolute nails. Lange is solid as well.

Lange is 12-0 with a 1.97 era. He has 131k in 114ip compared to Laxton's 98k in 109ip. You put the numbers together and I think it's clear Lange is better as a freshman

You're ignoring the era Laxton pitched in. Different bats, steroids, etc.

I love that we can even have this debate.

I'll acknowledge that where I should have before. Still, Lange's strikeout numbers are much better and all I'll take back is the "unquestionably" statement

I think you're completely ignoring the kinds of advantages hitters had back then.
And even so, their numbers aren't THAT different from each other

Today was impressive for Lange, but it will be hard for anyone , not just freshman to top Laxtons effort in the championship game. Biggest game of the year, against a good hitting Wichita State, and to go out there as a freshman and throw a complete game shutout and strike out 16, may be the greatest pitching performance in LSU history. I think because of this Laxton gets a slight edge of Lange, Lange could still have a game like Laxton but we have to get to the championship.

OP has probably never heard of Laxton.

Great points. I do think it's possible to have a better single game but not have an overall better season. Lange's total body of work is dang impressive.

reserving judgment for now, it's apples and oranges until Lange gets hardware

Just curious, how did Laxton end up doing at the next level? Did he make it to the big league?
Posted on 6/16/15 at 10:30 pm to supadave3
handful of mlb appearances

Looking at the overall talent in the SEC today compared to back when Laxton pitched, an argument can be made that even with the weaker bats, hitters in todays SEC are better. Both had phenomenal freshman years, but my vote goes to Lange.

Lane Mestepey was very good as a freshman Lange has been better but. Brett Laxton has.the next best thing to Warren Morris in LSU Baseball.History with the Shutout of Wichita State in 1993.
