This is probably the more disturbing thing from that article.
fricking ridiculous.

Right now, 20 states allow this. But in the other 30, you can turn to your would-be hook-up and say, "'Look I want to see a passport or driver's license,' and I'd say that's pretty diligent of you," says Grabel. But if the I.D. is fake and she is actually underage, you can still be convicted of statutory rape.
fricking ridiculous.

That's not true really. They can still drastically reduce his sentence and remove him from the registry, while still saying he's guilty.
I'm sure they can drastically reduce his sentence but if I'm not mistaken it's law that anyone convicted of a sex crime has to be on the sex offender registry. At least that's what I thought. Perhaps one of the OT legal experts can clear that up.

Louisiana's law SPECIFICALLY says that it's not a defense

Laws specifically designed to frick men

Dude got screwed but he had to have been a little leery when a 14 yr old showed up. Yeah yeah "they look like they're twenty these days".

I have no idea, but I didn't think this was true.
They did put a 25 year cap on his registry status, so I wonder if at the very least they could drop it to 1 year or something?
They could reduce the charges to something that doesn't require registry as well. He plead guilty to the charges because the prosecutor promised neutrality. In an appeal he can change his plea.

But cops can still lie to get the "truth" right?

They don't have to look 20, just 17, which she said she was.
Every HS in America has 14 year old girls that look 17.

Shoulda given that to a jury for nullification.

So a holy roller judge and an a-hole prosecutor completely fricked the kid over. Nice justice system.

Most girls under the age of 20 look young as frick to me. I'm not sure that there is that much difference if any at all physically between puberty and early 20's.

'm pretty sure I spend time around them daily.
Then clearly you aren't paying attention.

You?
I do, I am a high school teacher, coach, and mentor.

If you can't tell you're talking to a 14 year old girl, you need to keep your pants zipped.
This is just not a very smart thing to say. Kids develop physically and mentally at such different levels. You can deny that all you want, but its true.
I'll give you an example.
I had two students whose moms were diagnosed with cancers when they were still very young (junior high age).
They became the default parents for their younger sibling in their respective houses because their moms were too sick and their dads had to work their asses off to keep up with bills and everything else. Now imagine growing up like that, with that hanging over your head.
Now let's compare that to one of their class mates who still laughs at fart jokes and argued with me about Hawaii being a different country...

I've seen them look 18 before. Girl that used to always be at a bar I went to when I was 18-20. Had every guy in the place hard legging on her every weekend. I had found out she was a freshman in HS the first night I saw her there and promptly kept my distance. Early developed taller girl that puts on a ton of makeup can look however old she wants and this girl new exactly what she was doing. This ruling is absolute horseshite and if anybody should be blamed it's the parents. Know where your 14 year old is and this isn't an issue.

This
it one thing to mistake a 16 or 17 for being 18, but 14..... you gotta suspect something is not right

At sentencing he told Anderson, "You went online, to use a fisherman's expression, trolling for women to meet and have sex with. That seems to be part of our culture now: meet, hook up, have sex, sayonara. Totally inappropriate behavior. There is no excuse for this whatsoever."
I'll bet he's a crazy religious person who fricks men.

Definitely could see this. Its always the ones with staunch opposition to anything "immoral" that end up getting caught diddling the boy next door.

Based on what?
Scientifically speaking, we see that kids, especially girls, are hitting puberty earlier and earlier then ever before.
So this means they are developing at much younger ages. Physically speaking, it can be hard to tell sometimes. Emphasis on sometimes, to think there is a dead give away is just being naive.
Also, we all know plenty of 30 year old women who still act like teenagers.

We had girls when I was in 8th grade that looked 18-20. Freshman year of HS we had girls going out to college bars and dating seniors.
Girls hit puberty in like 5th grade these days.
