I'll never understand why people care about the 40 times of linemen

I have always thought this. When is the last time an OL needed to run 40 yards down the field fast to make a critical block?

He's a pup that looks to only scratched the surface. Grimes and Les know very well how to scout oline talent. I think this is a good pick up.

he may not need to run 40 yards, but being to to pull or get down field with some amount of speed and/or athleticism is important for a OL

but I'm not really concerned with his time either

espn a few years ago brought up the topic in their magazine. a study showed of the position groups at the NFL combine. A good 40 time for offensive lineman was a better predictor of success than any other position group

5.65 40 at 275 lbs?

Wow. He's not trying to outrun DBs man. 40 time for an offensive lineman is about as useful as SAT scores for a welder.

These are the kind of commits that I find almost as exciting as the 5 stars. Honey badger and claiborne started under the radar. Would love to see him on the field in about 3 years.

Looks like a good project. With all of the solid OLs we took last year, I like a gamble or two on the OL in this class.

Welcome, Jakori.

That's because there is a direct correlation between how athletic a 275lb+ human can be and how much speed he has. To think that the 40 means nothing for O-lineman is idiotic. If a 275lb kid can run a 40 at 5.00 rather than 5.65 than I can guarantee you that his shuttle times will be faster and that he will move more fluid. You cant just say "well, uhhhh, they only have to block for 10 yards max. Show me the last time they had to run down the field 40 yards for a block." Quit being an idiot and use your head.

edit: if this kid was running a 5.0 40 time, you think he'd still be a 3*?

Lot's of times. It's not super important, but speed in an olineman is very nice to have.
