This is a fascinating comparison and should put things into proper perspective.

I'm happy that American Pharaoh won the Triple Crown. That whole group is a class act. That said, this should put to rest any discussion about AP being in the same league as Secretariat. Secretariat will rule the roost for years to come. Horse Racing's version of Joe DiMaggio. A true American legend.

It really doesnt at all though. The horses ran two separate races. It was clear as day AP had a ton left in the tank at the end. That was not the fastest AP could run. Three things could happen if those two horses actually raced:

1. Secretariat still wins, but not as bad due to AP running faster as the Jockey would have rode him harder to close the lead(Most likely scenario IMHO)

2. Secretariat somehow runs even faster because AP pushes him at some point(Not likely)

3. Somehow AP actually wins because he had that much more left in the tank and he hasnt actually been pushed yet(Not Likely)

AP only ever trailed 2 horses in all 3 races total. He dominated the triple crown.

Just for some perspective

Yeah but modern day horses are better because they have gatorade and other PEDs.

I know little about horse racing and am relatively sure that Secretariat is the better horse--and likely the best of all time--but unless they were literally racing against each other, this video proves nothing except that Secretariat had a faster time at the Belmont on that particular day than American Pharoah did Saturday..

Also, heard a horse guy on the radio last night and found it interesting that Secretariat actually lost twice after winning the Triple Crown.

Fun argument but obviously not one that can be settled empirically.

Maybe you had to be there but, for me, I can't imagine what a horse better than Secretariat would look like.

I know I haven't seen one yet.

Notice how American Pharoah just held back the whole race and looked very casual galloping along until the last quarter. Then he kicked it up and pulled ahead easily. Had he kicked it on earlier he easily could have finished that race with a time similar to Secretariat.

He wasn't racing to break time records. He was racing to win. You really can't compare races side by side like this because different paces were set.

The splits tell the tale.
Pharoah ran 5 claimer splits for the first 1/2 of the race.
113.4 is ridiculously slow. Forget Secretariat, this horse couldn't run with Risen Star who ran 3/4 in 111.4 and ran the great filly Winning Colors into the ground.
There was no speed in the race. And no one in there tried to mess with him. They ran their race, but there were no rabbits...a very compliant group.
Give the horse credit for being on his game for all 3 races, but he's nothing near an all time great.
Alydar, Riva Ridge, Spectacular Bid, Easy Goer, Sunday Silence and many more would have drilled this horse.

No horse, no horse is close to the race horse Secretariat was. AP is a very solid race horse, and won the TC, might help revive racing for a while.

It's funny AP was pushed the entire race and still couldn't run faster while Secretariat was basically running by himself and continued to increase speed until the very end.

Why can't people just accept and rejoice in the fact that they were able to witness a triple crown winner? Instead yall fee the need to compare them and attempt to discredit the amazing accomplishment by the horse.

Anyone that thinks AP could hold Secretariat's jock is a complete moron.
