I've always heard it pronounced Maddy-gwan. Every time on the way to and from Tiger Stadium someone said it this way ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

[quote]I've always heard it pronounced Maddy-gwan. The hell? My old man grew up his whole life in Port Allen and all his people say Mare-in-gwen so I just assumed that was right
Hey I believe ya
I brought buddies from Ohio to the LSU/OSU game and I say guess how you pronounce that? I told them how I say it and they said, "c'mon man that can't be right." I just shrugged and said, who knows
Hey I believe ya

Back to living in Acadiana x 25 yrs. and people axe me where I'm from. They say I don't speak like I'm from there. Unless I turn it on like Epic Cajun.

This is closer to the way I've heard it pronounced. Madday-gwan, but the n is really soft and the Madday is said really fast

"pronounced traw-hawn" you got it brother. People that are Trahan's and pronounce it Tray han are simply denying their Heritage. There were 'NO' Tray han's in Nova Scotia.

Ironically, this thread is about "cajun" names. The word CAJUNS is actually an adaptation from mispronunciation of the word "Cadien" (kah-jan) which was short for Acadien or someone who hailed from Acadie. Yankees couldn't fathom dien saying the j sound so they spelled it cajun, but still pronounced it the old way. Generations later, and it's now kay-juhn.

Maringouin is french for mosquito
(Mad- ah-gwah)
Not good at pronunciation combos but the ah at the end is pronounced lik the word "an" WITHOUT the "n"
