"pronounced traw-hawn" you got it brother. People that are Trahan's and pronounce it Tray han are simply denying their Heritage. There were 'NO' Tray han's in Nova Scotia. :banghead:

Well stated TigerFanNKaty. I too have followed the Tigers since the mid 70s. I understand both sides of this argument. Some and it's seems the majority are happy with a W no matter how ugly it may have been and I can't argue that a W is far better than a L, even if it was painful to watch. However, my argument is; with the talent pool that we posses, why are we settling for ugly wins and not striving for excellence? I understand the injury situation this year guys so don't jump on my back already, hear me out. Sports, in general competition, should be teaching us to strive for excellence not complacency. For example; Joe Montana, Joe never was complacent in his strive for excellence. When he reviewed film footage he always saw his flaws and strove to overcome his weak points. I find that remarkable, considering he will be remembered as one the best to ever play the game. That, my friends, is the true heart of a Champion. Yes, we do have a top tier program but, there is certainly room for improvement. Now, if you view this as being a negative statement, well, your a Dick!

Jarrett Lee has proven his "Mettle"
Posted by BulldogQB on 10/17/10 at 10:08 am
Lucky for LSU that the “Pick 6 Kid” Jarrett Lee had the intestinal fortitude to take on “ALL” the criticism from his coaches, team mates and let’s not forget (how could we ever forget) all of arm chair quarterbacks here on the Rant and elsewhere. It would have been very easy to cash in the chips here at LSU when so many were down on him. But, Jarrett Lee has proved his “Mettle”. Unlike most who would have called it quits and moved on, he chose to stay and do the things necessary to make him a better player and over all a better person. He engaged adversity in the form of extreme scrutiny head on, from his coaches and LSU’s famous fan base. He refused to quit when many were praying for him to do so. Remember when got hurt and the “Fans” cheered? Jarrett Lee is class act on and off of the field, which is more than I can say for the majority of the Rant contributors. LSU is Lucky to still have him around.

He is tying his future to crowton and JJ. Period.
I agree completely with this one. The question remains, WHY??? Could it be because of his un-willingness to spend the time in the film room studying his next opponent and grading player performance? After all unlike Saban, Les is a "Family Man". He doesn't put in the long hours watching tape like the other successful coaches in the business do. Therefore he is ‘Depends’ on his assistance to do the work for him and then in turn bring him up to speed. It's no wonder things are the way they are. I’m not knocking the man for wanting to spend time with his family. However, if you don’t do what is necessary to be successful in your job, then your job is at risk. Ultimately if he continues his practice of doing things the way he does, he will be spending a lot of time with his family. Say what you want about Saban, but he put in the time. He was and is fully aware of what the weaknesses and strengths of his players and his opponents are. Obviously Les has been found Wanting in this department.

This seems contradictory. If JJ is mediocre and tentative (which I think most would agree) how do you blame the staff for not opening it up when they are uncomfortable with him and he with himself? How do you argue they are wasting his talent when there is not much there?
The defense and special teams won that game, with 5 interceptions and starting field position around the opponents own 45, the game shouldn't be close in the 4th Q.
Finally! Someone who gets it! My friends, the truth is, quarterback progression under Gary Crowton is painfully SLOW at best. Let’s face it, when he first arrived he had a quarterback ready to play. Matt Flynn understood the system and had the mental focus to get the ball to the play makers without much deliberation. Our boy JJ is still struggling with his decision process. The game is still moving entirely too fast for his mind’s eye. His skill at throwing the ball down field are poor at best. For me it's like watching Jamarcus Russell all over again. His progression is PAINFULLY SLOW! But, at least JM had a strong arm.

I personally don't care who plays, as long as they move the ball down the field.
I agree, it really doesn't matter as long as they are moving the ball forward. :geauxtigers:

Suggestions to improve our power run game.
The issue: Poor execution & lack of explosiveness off the ball.
What can be done to correct the problem: Conditioning, technical drills, keep doing it till you get it right. Execution! Execution! Execution! Execution! Execution! If they were executing correctly, nobody could stop them.
Is it time to hire a QB coach?
Posted by BulldogQB on 10/19/09 at 12:23 pm
With all of the discussions about the reasons our QB’s are performing below expectations, is it time to bring in a legitimate QB coach? IMO, I think so. Crowton may be a brilliant OC, but for me, he is falling short of expectations in the progression of our QB’s. Do we need another OC? I don’t think so. I think the problems that QB’s are having are manageable. I think they could benefit from a specialist. :geauxtigers:

Well JJ cannot play up to his potential because he is afraid of making a mistake and if he does
he saw what happened to Jarrett Lee. He is scared
to death is arse will be riding the pine if he mucks up. No kid should have to play under that
pressure. Like Carl Dubois said Jarret Lee was set up to fail. I have been saying that since last year
Don't you think that every kid in a starting position plays under that pressure? After all, there are kids waiting on the sideline that would be starters at most programs in the nation. I know it's been a while since I played, but back then, the best players were the ones who started. If someone played better than you, they were moved ahead in the line up. It's called competition and under the most circumstances it brings out the best in an athelete. Would you agree to that or has something changed

Matt Mauck wasn't "great." Neither was Matt Flynn. They were efficient, smart and got the ball to people to make plays. Both teams had great defenses.
quote:
The starting QB should be the guy that has the most confidence and the one who has proven his ability to read the defense and get the ball into the hands of the play makers. We really don’t need a heisman grade QB, all we need is a smart confident QB that can get the ball to play makers with minimal mistakes.

Crowton's offense put up big numbers in 2007 ( LINK to 2007 Season results). I haven't looked back at any of the games from 2007 but I have a feeling that the offensive game planning and play calling were much different. Of course, Flynn was a 5th-year senior, but I just remember us having much more of a vertical passing game, and not the horizontal stuff we seem to be getting this year.
I could not agree more. The fact that Flynn was a 5th year QB played a huge role in the way Crowton and Miles developed their offensive scheme. Whether the fans like or not it's just going to take some time to develop these QB's under Gary Crowton's style of offense.
quote:
One last thing, this "looking to the sideline" is also killing this team. More than a few times, their late calling in plays. On 1 crucial series in the 3rd Q, it cost us 5 yds. Yes, T-bob got the penalty, but that was on the coaches.
I agree that it is definitely causing some problems. However, I think it shows that the coaches do not trust the QB or the center to read the defense and call the blocking assignments correctly.
quote:
Crowton is the offensive coordinator and QB coach, it is his responsibility to put the soph QB in a good situation in which he can use his physical abilities and playmakersin order to gain positive yards. when it doesnt work in the first five games, something has to change in playcalling, personnel, and formations. So I disagree, Crowton and coaching are the problem areas
In all fairness to Gary, he builds in safety valves in most of his designed plays. Some might ask what the hell is he talking about. What it means is; if the QB senses pressure coming from a direction then he a designed safety check off or receiver that should be open under that condition, the QB is to "automatically check the receiver" and dump the ball if he is open. JJ is not doing this, he is locking onto one receiver and if he is covered then he is like a deer caught in the head lights of an on coming car. It just may take a long time for him to comprehend and get comfortable with Crowton's scheme. For you 1st and 2nd chair boys, it's not like playing EA Sports, these boys coming at you full speed are wanting nothing more than to knock your head off. Unlike a video game it happens more times here in the real world than you might think!

2007, Gary Crowton, when he started off the year blasting MSU and VT. At the end of the game the VT staff and players were singing the praises of Gary Crowton for keeping them off balance all night long. Anyone know where that Gary Crowton went to???? We could sure could use him about now! :geauxtigers:

Who says the battle is closed for the starting position is closed? Look, these guys (all of the QB's) are looked at every week to evaluate how well they are progressing. I've seen it posted several times the feeling that Les is paranoid about the situation created by JL last year with the pick 6's. I think there is probably some truth to this theory. As I recall, JL WAS NOT THE ONLY PLAYER LAST YEAR TO MAKE MISTAKES! Well Les, Get The Hell Over It!!! Your QB is going to make some mistakes. Your OL, DL, DS, ST all will make some mistakes. Someone needs to break out the Jim Mora tapes to remind him of what happens when you play not to lose. Get some balls Les, let it go. Personally, I think the kids need a legitimate QB coach. Obviously Crowton is failing to meet expectations in this department also.
