How do you feel about a runner on third running on contact no matter what?

It seems LSU has too many runners thrown out at the plate because of this philosophy. I would like to see the runner take a half-second and make a read on the ball to decide whether to take off or not.

The idea is that any ball hit on the ground somewhere other than pitcher or rocked at 1/3 and the run scores. If you don't run on contact (actually running on down angle, see ball on ground and go) then you have to stay until the ball is in the outfield.
If you hesitate for 1/2 a second any ground ball in the infield and you are getting thrown out

I "feel" that CM and his staff spent lots of time reviewing the odds given their understanding of the players' physical abilities. I haven't at all. I'll add that the number of times a runner gets gunned down at the plate isn't really the relevant number - what matters is how many scores do you get when you run on contact vs. not doing so.

The runner and third base coach have to be aware how the infielders are positioned. Sometimes all four will come in in order to cut the runner down at the plate. Other times only the corner positions are in and the middle fielders remain back at normal depth. Too often an LSU runner will take off on a ball hit to second when the second baseman is in on the grass. Diminishes our odds of a successful outcome.

I think predetermining that you will always run home is a bad idea.

We do some strange things on the bases. How Scivique didn't score on those two ground balls on Friday is beyond my comprehension.

I wish runners on first, who are NOT the winning run, would pay more attention and quit getting hit by the ball

Stevenson scoring in the 3rd USC game is one of the reasons it is done. It puts pressure on the defense to make a play. Plus if the runner on 3rd freezes after the secondary lead, there is a chance the fielder throws that way anyway to get them in a rundown which has also happened this year too.

This is not just a CPM practice. It's universally done this way through out baseball. As one noted, it all comes down to numbers/percentages, and CPM does use the percentages in every decision he makes. Too, he also knows his runners better than anyone. As Kyle Peterson has said every game he's broadcast lately, when it comes to running the bases, LSU is all about continually applying pressure on the other team to make a play.
