Has anyone ever seen a vehicle with drum and disc brakes on a the same axle? I ran into it this and was a little puzzled on how to proceed. I ended up not changing the drum brakes.

Could the drums be only for the parking brake?

Which side had the drum? It sounds like someone did something very wrong to that vehicle

the drum is the parking brake.

wait, so a car with discs in the front and drums on the rear only uses the drums as a parking break?
I don't think that's correct, but I could be wrong.
I had a 2001 Jeep Cherokee and replaced the the pads on the discs. Then, I replaced the shoes inside the rear drums. I also had to rebuild the internal components to the drum becuase I had a leak in one.

Yep, that's a nissan thing. Immediately reminded me of the 300ZX.
small drum brake built into the inside of a disc brake to act as the E-Brake.

This is the way it is set up on my vehicle. The drum is part of the disc hub assembly. The drum is used as the parking brake.

So it's the emergency brake? It's very strange. I've never seen it.

You mean drum on one side and disc on the other?

Both on the same wheel. Removed the caliper and brakes, then removed the rotor, then saw the drum brakes.

Yep, drum is the parking brake.
I thought was fairly common, but may be Nissan specific. They do it on a lot of their vehicles.

GM was using this design on vettes in the 60's and many years after. Wasn't great but it would hold the car on inclines if adjusted properly.

Ford F150 had that set up until 2008. Not sure if they were still using that set up after 2008.

A lot of cars have that. It is easy and cheap, so manufacturers do it

Yes, that is the same basic design I was refering to on the vettes. Thanks for the pic.

My 2003 Yukon has the same disc/drum set up.
Changing the brakes pads was a pain too. External torx bolts and locktite made for a bad day
