Everyone gets most of your points.
The rec needed to be redone.
We all just think the addition of an LSU-shaped lazy river is stupid.
There probably won't be any wavering on that point.

That's good. For such a large university that place was a shite hole. Way worse than my undergrad.

I'm curious what the cost per student is annually on the additional fees, just for the lazy river.

Which is fine. This guy is going past that argument

Also, how does student loan money have zero impact on a student?
Ask my wife who ended grad school with 100k in debt, but didn't fully understand just how much of a monthly bill that would be. She realizes how stupid she was now, but it's not like she's the only one. If you could read, you can see that nowhere did I say "zero impact". I said "no understanding of what it's like to pay off".
And I fully understand that this is separate from the budget. Quit bringing that up. And the vote may have not been stated as, "vote for this kick arse pool". But ultimately, students voted on something to provide them with facilities that I believe are not necessary to providing the student with the necessary skills and degree to be competitive in the workforce.

I'm most certainly not going past that. The rec could use improvements. But doing something like this with that money is just not the best use of the money. Simple as that. Proponents like yourself are saying that the rec is important and that it will attract more students. I'm not saying the rec isn't important, just that in this economic time, the vote for this is a little out of place. It's my opinion.

This article is misleading.. It's not as if LSU is just building a lazy river, this is part of the UREC expansion project. They're rebuilding the entire UREC and adding this in among many other things.

By that logic there's about 30 degrees at LSU that could be eliminated since they aren't providing the student with the necessary skills or degree to be competitive.

Actually, you said:

. Using money that really has no effect on the student
Zero impact, no effect. Pretty damn close.

Which is meaningless without health. The correlation between a healthy body and a healthy mind can't be ignored.

The library is horrific, I remember sweating through my clothes in Lockett due to thermostats not working in the summer, I took history classes in desks from 1960 with the windows open to keep cool, I lived in a dorm that was so disgusting that I paid nearly a semesters worth of living expenses in fines just to move out. That's not even touching on getting quality instructors. I graduated in engineering
So you're basing your knowledge of the LSU facilities on the 1960's...
LSU has great dorms and dining halls now that they turn a profit on. LSU has built some very good facilities that do include A/C. The library is a shithole that I would have no problem donating money to tear down as an alum.

Well that's another topic. I would be against wasting a lot of money to save useless degrees at the expense of other programs just as much as with the rec issue. And it's nothing against the rec or those programs. It's just when it comes time to hunker down and deal with it, you've got to make the best decisions with your money.

No, I'm basing it off of 5 years ago when it still felt like I was going to class in the 60's.
And to the student loan situation. Trust me, there are plenty of people that spend that money as if it has no effect on them.

just the idea of raising money off of the students through fee bill charges for something this trivial
So you're telling me that the UREC didn't need to be renovated? That is asinine to anyone that actually uses the gym. You must be fat.

Nowhere did I say this. It's just not that important in the grand scheme of the university's financial state.

So where do these funds come from? Seriously you people can't think that since it comes from a different account it has no effect? If I'm putting it in that account, it means that it can't be put in another account. I'm not advocating raiding the account. I'm merely stating that voting to put the money in that account in the first place isn't the best use of that money. I agree that it's been voted upon and you can't touch it now. Just don't think it was the best time to add charges to the fee bill for something like this.

Voluntary fees.

This account didn't just magically pop up and it was voted on by the people funding the account. Is your issue with health and fitness?
quote:
f I'm putting it in that account, it means that it can't be put in another account.
Sure, but why do you think the people funding it should have no say? Sounds like theft.

Oh, just a little theft. I guess that's cool.

That money wouldn't be there, for you to want to steal, otherwise.
quote:
I agree that it's been voted upon and you can't touch it now.
I actually think that a vote could have been held by SGA to divert some funding. I'm not sure how popular that would be but this would have had to happen a long time ago. Once funding was approved for the contract documents it was too late.

This was added a few years ago, before the current financial situation. I don't think it was the student's responsibility to predict what has happened since.
