What am I looking at here...
- 12-18 inches
- SOB's head flattened out pretty much when I approached him
- head got about twice as wide as his body when he flattened it
- I am in Texas
I thought it was just a chicken snake but I dont think that I have ever seen ones head flatten out as much as this one did...wish I could of gotten a pick of it while it was flat.

Looks like a rat snake to me.

I can't see shite on my phone but flattening out the head sounds like hog nose snake.
Looks like a rat snake but bad pic.

I agree with Rize. Looks like a juvenile hog-nosed snake.

I'm sticking with rat snake. They also flatten their heads and will also shake their tails to mimic a rattle snake. Dorothy will be here at some point to give us the answer.

I think it's an Eastern Hognose, like this one:
Rectangle blocks don't look enough like a rat snake when I enlarged the original pic on my iPad. Mr. Dot is out herping right now but will be along shortly to correct me.
OP, what part of Texas?

I blew a hog nose's head off when I was about 13 thinking it was a damn king cobra!

Thanks for all of the feedback everyone!
Dorthy - I am in The Woodlands
eta...really looks like that hog nose in your picture...look at the coloring on the head...it is identical.

They're great snakes. I haven't seen one in decades but we used to keep them as kids. They'd get so docile they wouldn't cobra for you after awhile.

hognose snakes are awesome
we always had one when we were kids
you could bike ride to lewisberg from mandeville and there would always be a few to find
they will roll over and play dead if you don't fall for the king cobra routine

They love them some toads - hard to feed them year-round. Had one eat 5 large toads in one feeding. Had some who would pull all the tricks, some who wouldn't. My dad used to catch them in New Orleans East. None to be found south of the green bridge (i.e. In da Patish).
