The Cubs move Kris Bryant up in the lineup to third, sandwiched behind RizzOBP and Soler. I'd much rather Rizzo hit behind Bryant...meaning move Rizzo to 4th, if they were intent on moving Bryant up to 3rd. In all honestly, Bryant warrants hitting 2nd in the order behind Rizzo and Soler.

Chris Denorfia has been sent to the 15-day DL with the gimpy hamstring. Matt Szczur has been called up. James Russell has also been called up and a corresponding move on both the 25 and 40 man rosters is required. I did hear a mention of Phil Coke being DFA'd...but that's just hearsay at the moment.

You would have to be a shitty shitty, really shitty hitter if you ever bat behind a damn pitcher.

No.

Okay, Gonzalez Germen sent down and Anthony Varvaro is up as well. Two new bullpen arms for tonight.

The reason he isn't is because they want to get Soler going and by putting Soler in 4 hole behind Rizzo and Bryant you hope you can get him some better pitches to hit. With Rizzo and Bryant getting on base almost half the times they come to the plate will obviously create more opportunities for Soler to hit with men on base, thus opening up the possibility of him seeing more pitches that are in the strike zone instead of the pitcher having the ability to get him to chase outside of the strike zone.

Wouldn't it be the other way around? I would think if that were the case you'd want Soler hitting in front of Rizzo and Bryant.

1. Fowler
2. Soler
3. Bryant
4. Rizzo

I think we could see this, though:

1. Fowler
2. Bryant
3. Rizzo
4. Soler

He's back at Iowa. Through 5 games, he's hitting .286/.348/.524/.872 with 1 HR, 2 2B and 6 K in 23 PA playing 2B and SS.

Half the Ks were in his first game back also.

I remember hearing about his sister dying or a death in the family or something and was just wondering. Glad he is back playing ball.

Or because the manager wants to have essentially 2 lead off hitters back to back? Dumbarse

I agree that, at least for now, Bryant should go to 2nd with Rizzo, Soler, Castro, and Montero behind him. Rizzo has been an OBP machine though, so he'll be OK in the 2 hole too. My reasoning is to try to get Bryant's power bat going. He'll see more hittable pitches with Rizzo coming up behind him than Castro or Montero.

Agreed, if you want to get someone's bat going, put a threat or two behind them and make opposing pitchers throw them strikes.

No because simply put, pitchers can be more aggressive with Soler and throw him those sliders in the left handed batters box that he has been chasing when no one is on base. He's much more likely to see hittable pitches that are in the strike zone if there are guys on base. Pitchers can't afford to nibble and try to get Soler to expand his strike zone. They have to try to get ahead in the count by throwing pitches in the strike zone.

And remember this could simply be because the Cubs are facing a left handed pitcher tonight also. The lineup could go right back to Soler, Rizzo and Bryant tomorrow night.

If you think he hasn't been seeing pitches to hit when Rizzo is on base in front of him 45.1% of his plate appearances, he surely won't get anything to hit with no one on base.

I think pitchers would rather nibble and walk Bryant, also getting him to strike out a fair amount, than let him hit one 450 feet. Especially when the quality of hitter drops pretty dramatically after him.

With no one on base, pitchers would be more likely to throw something he could hit out of the park for a solo HR. My point in doing this is to get Bryant's power bat going. I don't want him hitting in the 2 hole the rest of the season.

Right I get what you're trying to accomplish, but if Bryant comes up with first and second and no outs or one out, the pitcher simply can't afford to try and nibble and get Bryant to expand his strike zone without first getting ahead in the count. In that situation you simply cannot afford to fall behind 2-0 because that is when you become susceptible to the 450 bomb.

With no one on base there is much more opportunity for trying to get him to expand the strike zone. Having Bryant come to the plate with runners on base will always be better for this team, even if he walks. Montero and Castro behind him are both hitting around .300. Gotta throw strikes to someone.
