We were the one team talking him up more than others. Plus he said don't draft me. So no one did

I like the come play with Drew Bree's angle. He does put guards into the probowl

@Gil_Brandt: If La'el Collins is cleared after meeting with police tomorrow, he will sign a FA contract. There will a lot of interest.

Looks like the race for him starts tomorrow. Really hope were in on it as long as everything's ok

It's a need for the Saints. We need 2 Gs. Evans is about done too despite him playing this year. Really it's the only position that's a glaring hole aside from WR/TE on this team right now. I don't know how Evans made Pro Bowl last year but he was horribly inconsistent. Another year of aging isn't going to help him. I have very little confidence Lelito is good enough to start considering he couldn't push horrible C to the bench or Grubbs. Production will no doubt fall off there even if Grubbs wasn't amazing. I thought Grubbs played better than Evans at times last year...

Maybe this was all in the plans for the Saints. Make the G position more attractive so they can get a steal? That's why they didn't draft one? Doubtful but it does make us more attractive. I fail to see how someone can look at the Saints and say they don't have as good a shot as anywhere to start at G. As someone else said too, Brees gets rid of the rock fast so it's not like you'll be blocking for a guy who holds the ball too long making you look worse than you are.

Collins is meeting with Baton Rouge police on Monday. Assuming that meeting goes the way it's supposed to, he could have an NFL team as early as Monday evening.

If this is something that can be cleared up in one afternoon, why didn't he do it before the draft even started? I don't think it will be resolved Monday.

I'm sure he will be a hot UDFA, and I'm sure he has the Saints in mind. But I wouldn't put too much stock into him being on a roster by Monday.

Yeah cI'mcertainly not expecting full 100% closure Monday, but I certainly expect the next big advancement to happen

I think the Saints should try to sign him NOW. Why wait? If he gets charged, then you cut him.

"He is on our board," Payton said. "For us he's on our board as a guard. I don't know how the rest of the teams in our league see him. That's not a bad thing. He's right up the road here. We obviously have pretty good insight as to his makeup and how he plays. I'm sure there's a number of team that have him as a tackle as well.

That's from nola.com on May 1st. So unless something drastic has changed, I could see us being one of the many many teams that will give him interest. We did meet with him before the draft so there is some familiarity there. It just depends on Collins.

If he wants to play guard then he should probably come here. But he might have his heart set on playing tackle and if so, he probably won't give us a second glance, especially after we took Peat.

I say we either have a really good chance or hardly any at all. No in between.

He wasn't on our board because if he was we would have drafted him

Probably has his bidders in place already. He knows better than anyone what actually happened. Why would they make it seem like his meeting was such a technicality if it wasn't?

He seemed to be willing to accept round 2/3 money because of the circumstances, and barring injury or flop, will still be getting that $ range with a decent designation at year 3, just not guaranteed up front. I doubt the "don't take me outside round 3" was a ploy to get someone to take him. No reason to play chicken. Again, a team that did draft, didn't have to sign him immediately and cut a check. No money would have changed hands.

What benefits or leverage have they gain since Thursday? None. I'm starting to think his team did all they could, and put him in the best place to succeed after this unfortunate incident. No way ANYONE even getting questioned in association was going in Round 1. He might have been Round 2 material anyway. Maybe BRPD was the one that suggested Monday. Maybe they have further investigating to do before then, or people to question before him.

I don't know this kid, or his situation, or his relationships, or his past, or any of it. But i hope the family of the girl who died, finds justice swiftly, and I hope La'El does too.

Oh, well I guess no one wants him then. Because, you know, he went undrafted.

I bet he would. Because it's literally impossible for him to get that this year. He gets UDFA money. The end.

i think its logical to assume that La'el will only sign with a team willing to guarantee the maximum UDFA contract. I also think it's logical to assume all 32 teams are willing to do that if its at all possible for them to do so.

Once he knows the money situation is resolved, he might be thinkiing:

I wish I could play for a team who understands and appreciates how tough it was to be denied fair treatment by Roger goodell who refused to let me enter the supplemental draft if I proved my complete innocence.

I wish I could play for a coach who understands what it's like to know you've earned millions by your effort and skill, but you won't get paid because Roger Goodell made sure of it.

Sean: mmmmm La'el...

I agree with venom, if it was as easy as one meeting and done, why didn't he do it before he lost out on millions of dollars. Press said last week the police "weren't ready" but that made no sense.

If he is cleared of any involvement...

He also has the best chance and closing the financial gap here at home. Collecting checks for autographs around the state, college and pro merch, appearances, etc. An offensive lineman won't have that opportunity 1000 miles away from home.

I would imagine any team offering him LT play will be where he goes. Any big teams who have horrible LTs? That's where the money position is and where he probably wants to play. I don't think the Saints are seriously in play but if he was smart he'd see the Saints really have 2 G openings. Lelito isn't a lock and Evans is almost done here. I don't think he'd put Evans on the bench but he definitely can for Lelito.

On the flip side if he did come here and play guard I don't think he'd lose all that much. Guard is our Money position. Our guards gets paid like LT's...I don't think money will be an issue.

Didn't you tell all of us that the Saints were taking Collins at 31 and going to finish with 6 or 7 picks?

You are definitely trustworthy
