2015 Louisiana Waterfowl Hunter Survey
Posted on 4/30/15 at 11:01 am
Posted on 4/30/15 at 11:01 am
The 2015 Waterfowl Hunter Survey was launched earlier this week. We sent out 3,000 mail-in surveys to randomly selected hunters, 3,000 postcards to another random sample with a link to do the survey on-line, and we sent e-mails to another 20,000-plus waterfowl hunters who had e-mail addresses in the LDWF hunting-license database. We are strongly urging all hunters that receive those surveys to complete them according to the instructions received. Those surveys provide the most representative and scientifically-valid information.
We will send out a press release on Friday announcing the survey and post a banner link on the front page of the LDWF website so that all other hunters not selected for one of those 3 survey modes can participate in the survey.
Although the open-web survey is a biased sample because participants tend to be more avid, dedicated hunters that hunt more and kill more than average, our research from doing mail-out and open-web surveys concurrently has shown striking similarity in responses to 'attitude' or 'satisfaction' questions. Consequently, the open-web surveys have been incredibly valuable in increasing participation and information for evaluating support for potential management and regulatory actions.
We hope that all waterfowl hunters receiving a survey via USPS mail or e-mail will complete those surveys, and any hunter NOT selected for one of those surveys will go to the LDWF website and take the open-web survey.

Got the e-mail this morning and filled it out. The biggest issues I had this year (hunting WMA's in NWLA) was hunter-crowding and lack of birds. There's not much to do about the latter, but the former was pretty bad this year. People setting up within earshot of us numerous times. Made me want to club a baby seal.

Do you get any information out of me completing it saying I didn't hunt because I'm tired of spending money on shitty seasons?

Will do when I see it thanks

I wish we had more people like you who just quit after a bad season.

If we were allowed to drink when we hunt, the herd would naturally cull itself and we wouldn't have these overcrowding issues.

I hope so, but that was up to you. About 1/3 of duck hunters in Louisiana don't buy a license and hunt every year. For you to be selected for the survey, you had to either have a duck license or be HIP registered and reported killing at least 1 duck or goose during the 2013 season. One of the questions on the survey was which of the last 5 years you hunted.
Some states have done "lapsed hunter" surveys intending to get the opinions of those hunters who have quit the sport, and we will probably do that too some day. Because our active duck hunter numbers have nearly doubled since 2005, it's a pretty low priority for us at this time.

Filled out, and I've got to agree with the crowding... wanna be duck commanders... I've had numerous times the past two years of people coming to a pond, realizing we're in it, and setting up one pond over

This is pathetic.
He is not saying they poach, he is saying they don't go hunting every year.
I think...

Makes sense, I should have re-read.

Just filled it out.
Other than the crowding at WMAs, etc., I realllly wish they would throw a weekend back into the West Zone split.
Season is open every single weekend from start to finish. A few years back, it was like a fresh start coming back into the second split after a good rest for the birds.
Mr Larry, do you have a name or email where I can contact someone with a legality question dealing with crops?

did it this morning.
i didn't have a problem with overcrowding on WMAs, but i don't hunt the easy-to-get-to spots. hell, half of my scouting is dedicated to getting away from other hunters.

I received the email and will respond later this week.
I would like your advice Mr Reynolds:
How should I fill it out to increase the season?

I don't understand the question.
The season length and bag limits are set by federal regulations. Nothing you can say or do will increase those things because Louisiana has always set the most liberal season regulations allowed by federal law.
The same is true of the earliest and latest season dates. You can provide whatever comments you like at the end of the survey, but nothing you can say or do will allow us to hunt later than the last Sunday in January.
Within federal limitations, we have choices, and a big part of the survey is seeing what choices are most popular with hunters ..... like 88 days with a 2-bird bag or a 74 days with a 3-bird bag for specklebelly geese for example.

If you were talking about me it was a real question. If they want to know about people who used to duck hunt but no longer hunt, I would have helped him by filling out his form. But it doesn't look like that is a priority at all for him or the office. I was offering the side of people who don't duck hunt or didn't hunt this past year.
I thought it might be info they want to know about.
