What's the story? What was the argument?

No particular story. I know it's a broad statement but it's spot on. Just TIFWIW

My Mom always sides with me because I'm her favorite and am always right.

So if your kids learn to develop convictions and the knowledge to defend their convictions, even if they conflict with what you think, you should automatically take the opposite side just to be contrarian? As if doing so is going to provide some sort of great life lesson aside from "My (insert parent) is an inflexible stubborn arse?"
You can't let your kids do whatever they want. And you can't let your kids never do anything. Extremes are never good in parenting.

I did not say take the opposite side, I said don't take sides.Your missing the point.if two or more of your children are having a disagreement over something, a parent should stay unbiased.

always take the side of the kid with the most potential.

What if one is wrong and the other is right?

If a parent believes one side is wrong they should say so. What was the argument about? Why would you stay out of it if you know one side is wrong.

Take the side of the one with cutest grand kids.
People don't like fat ugly grand kids. Ever.

Don't have kids to begin with

I'm with Dawg. This thread makes no sense without examples. Is your mom and sibling saying that green apple jolly ranchers are the best jolly rancher (which they most certainly are) or are they agreeing that the best way to get rid of the bastard unborn child is to push her down the stairs...
