My problem is that the U.S. is in no position to leave its best player off the team when the replacements are not near that level. Brad Davis is not an international level player, let alone one that should be starting against Germany. Even if Donovan didnt have the fitness, he would have been a better late game sub than Wondo. I also don't think it is a matter to " get over," as that implies an emotional response. It is simply a criticism. My view is that it was probably a matter of egos clashing, as JK's playing career dwarfs LD's, and maybe that is where the problem came from. And while the results were good, for me the process was problematic, which doesn't indicate future success.
How do people not agree with this? It blows my mind. People defend Jurgen tooth and nail when really the whole ordeal was just absurd, and to be honest, not too confidence-inducing in terms of our prospects moving forward. What's to say he won't make similar gaffes in the future, or put personal disputes ahead of the team? It's a scary thought.

I'm VERY interested to see how he handles it if/when Howard expresses interest to play next year.

He'll roll Rimando out there and probably bash the shite out of Howard publicly.

I don't hate him. I'm not saying he has done everything wrong. He's been middling, which is what Arena and Bradley were honestly. I was sold on the hire that we would progress tactically and technically, and it doesn't seem like we've done that. He has brought more German-Americans in the mix, as well as Mexican-Americans, and I'm all for increasing the size of our player pool.
If Wondo makes that shot at the end of the Belgium game, this discussion would be characterized differently. I still think that was a moment made for a player of Donovan's ability. And maybe something went wrong in the LD-JK dynamic when they were at Bayern. Maybe LD saw his limitations as a coach first hand, and was less than enthralled with the hire. Regardless, from every angle that I look at it, LD should have been our no. 10 in Brazil.

And talk about how MLS is a terrible league and he wants everyone playing at the highest level.
Then call in David Yeldell, who hasn't played for Bayer Leverkusen in about 18 months.

Leaving Donovan out of the team was just so damn stupid. Can't believe this thread got this much play, but a good read.

Landy was lazy as frick the two years leading up to the WC. Do you think he earned his spot? The problem with Landy is that he only performs when he has a chip on his shoulder and promptly proved that in the first game after he was left out.
For what it's worth though,I really wouldn't have had an issue if he were included in the squad because he was obviously still good enough, but it's really not that hard to see why Jurgy made the decision.

So what? He was a much better option than Brad Davis or Wondo.
You being an Everton fan makes your post even worse. He was GREAT on his stint there.

In 2011 & 2012, sure he was lazy.
2013, no, he was in the best form of any USMNT player.

He was great at Everton, yes, but that has nothing to do with this. I don't have anything against the guy, but he looked bored and unmotivated in the 2 years leading up to the WC. He doesn't deserve a spot in the team if he's not going to work for it. That was my point.
I also stated that I wouldn't have been against his inclusion in the team considering the lack of options around him.

Seriously, were you in a coma in 2013?

He must be presenting this MVP trophy to somebody else.
I love the narrative re-writing from the Jurgy sycophants.
He was the best American player in 2010, after a great spell at Everton. His form *did* dip a bit in the middle of 2011 - but Everton still wanted him back. He took three whole months (yeeeeaaaarrrzzzz) off from soccer (after playing basically non-stop from the start of the 2009 MLS season until the end of the 2012 season) and came back. He was the best American player (again) in 2013, and appeared to be the best American again immediately after the WC selection. But somehow (apparently), Jurgen picked the 4 days in the last 15 years that Landon wasn't among the best 23 American players to make his roster selection.
For me, it is so much less of a pro-Landon stance as it is an exposure of how full of shite Jurgen is. Look at every example of saying one thing and doing another. Read Tim Howard's book and read between the lines a bit about the group's reactions to Jurgen. (And hey, look - Timmy took a step back from the Nats, too.)
Interestingly enough, the Jurgen tenure has been covered with long stretches of shite play (as crazy4lsu pointed out). His seat was REALLY warm after we got skull-fricked by Belgium right before the Gold Cup. What helped Jurgen the most? Cruising through the Gold Cup and finishing strong in WC qualifying. The team really was clicking in the back half of 2013.
It must have been Nick Rimando's locker room presence that made all the difference in 2013, right?

It was a mistake to not take him to Brazil. End of story.

To be fair, that's not true.
We were in the midst of that competitive match winning streak during the Gold Cup (a month after those WCQ wins over Panama and Honduras) to get back on track in the hex.
However, after that loss at Honduras to begin the hex, there was that whole thing with the anonymous player scandal and there were strong rumors that if they lost in the snow game against Costa Rica, JK was going to be fired.

But what is the excuse for the long periods of poor play and the general tactical shittyness? We were promised an upgrade to Bobball, but what we've gotten is Bobball-lite where we suck at defending and suck at counter attacking. At least with Bradley we had an identity.

Also I'd like to point out that we were dominated for the most part by Ghana, Germany and Belgium. It was amazing we got points out of Ghana, and stayed in the game as long as we did against Belgium.
I'm directing this toward JK supporters in general.

And gave up that stoppage time goal to Portugal. Messed up us winning the group and drawing Belgium in the round of 16.

Also how did Timmy Chandler make the team after being a count for 15 months, while Donovan couldn't make he team for being "lazy" for the same time period?
