It is very easy to get a job at one of the big 4 going through the CIA program at LSU. You will start off in their risk advisory (internal Audit) groups, but it is very easy to switch to another group within their consulting departments. I have seen numerous people do it.

Consulting at the Big 4 is limited due to their audit practices. Consulting projects for audit clients can create conflicts of interest, or the appearance of conflicts. You might want to consider one of the consulting businesses that were spun off from the big accounting firms (there used to be more than 4) instead of the scaled back consulting practices retained by the Big 4.
Um going to have to highly disagree with you. It is true that consulting or advisory engagements are limited with audit clients. Which is why we work with the hundreds of other large clients who are not our audit clients. The advisory business for my company was $6.5B last fiscal year. I'd hardly call that limited (that's more than both Bain and BCG's global revenues). Not to mention that the advisory and consulting practices of the big 4 are the fastest growing for each company.

All good advice here. With an engineering background, you would be a desirable MBA candidate and could get into business consulting from there.

Thanks yall, I really do appreciate it. This world is so outside the realm I have been preparing to enter all through college...which is why it interests me

I actually know a dude who went from audit to consulting at Deloitte. And it was to the legit strategy & operations group, not advisory or whatever. Super rare but can be done.

become partner at big 4...then take a cfo gig with one of your clients
If you're going to practically kill yourself to make partner at one of the Big 4, why in the world would you quit to do something else after reaching the pinnacle of your profession?

I was always under the impression that if you aspired to reach that level in public accounting, you intended on making it a career rather than a stepping stone. I completely understand leaving for a fortune 500 CFO position but is that option readily available? Most of those partners have to be making 400-500k.
