AZ/AZ State spinoff thread: 5 CFB programs that shouldn't suck like they do

In no particular order
1. Colorado: With the town, the state, and the tradition they established in the 80s and 90s, there's no excuse for this team to be a complete doormat.
2. Tennessee: They've had a 10-year hangover, but they're showing signs of coming out.
3. Illinois: I can't believe this team just fights to be bowl eligible. Every now and then they pull a Rose Bowl or Sugar Bowl out their arse but they should be better than that.
4. Purdue: That program has been clueless since Joe Tiller left. Well...before he left, technically. This is the school that gave us Brees, Everett, Griese, Dawson, etc.. Now they're a joke.
5. (tie) UNLV/Hawaii: I know the schools' commitment to football is weak, but come on. It shouldn't be hard to get at least 3-star talent to come to Vegas and Hawaii.

Colorado has no shot due to the president and faculty.
Illinois, Purdue compete against tOSU, Michigan, MSU, NU so forth so they are not really football schools anyway, IMO.
UNLV and Hawai'i are not big departments and wont spend the money.
The only program that should be a power but isn't is Tennessee. They have the best of all the schools you listed, willing to spend, and they have a tradition.

The Joe Tiller Era was the epitome of what Purdue can be on the football field IMO.

I always name Virginia in these threads. There is no conceivable reason for them to suck so consistently for so long.
Tremendous resources, fertile recruiting ground, incredible campus, beautiful stadium, excellent academics, great tradition. It doesn't make sense.

UVa is a basketball school. They never were good before Welsh and probably wont be after him. They compete against too many schools and seem like they do not care about football.

We haven't been bad for 10 years and an LSU fan should know that but I get what you are saying

1. Virginia - the talent up there is absurd. They even pull in a few studs every year. That should be enough to not entirely suck in the ACC.
2. The Carolinas - With Georgia, Florida, and the homegrown talent, there is no reason they shouldn't at least be middle of the pack every year.
3. UCF - The school is fricking huge and in the middle of possibly the most talented high school football area in the nation and still suck.
4. Texas - It really shouldn't matter who the coach is there, the fact that that program is not in the running for the national championship every year is unfathomable.
5. Maryland - They have the Under Armor founder in their backyard and still cannot pull some of the awesome talent that comes out of that region.

Hawaii has one winning season since the Sugar Bowl. You'd think you'd be able to get a good enough coach and a couple of Samoans and win enough games to at least get to your own bowl game. They fell off a cliff like Tulane fell off a cliff after Bowden.

From my viewpoint Maryland is like UVa, more of a basketball school. They go all in for basketball and hope football does well.
At least they are not like KU were KU basically tells football to survive and gets no help from basketball. If KU would have shared some money Mason would have stayed and they would be a very solid program. Roy and crew were too greedy and did not want to share though.

When I went to LSU they couldn't get to bowl games and after I left they were dancing in the streets because they got invited to Shreveport. Technically .500 isn't "suck," but for a program of that magnitude it is. That's how I feel about Tennessee.

Hawaii pulled Colt Brennan and that wide receiver out of their arse. They may never do that again. Pure luck that both turned into something special. The thought of having to get on a plane for every single away game sounds awful, and the islands aren't all beaches. Besides, they won't be able to spend enough money to lure the kids in.

If not for Mack, Texas would not have much success. From the 80's until Mack showed up they were basically terrible. They would have few good/decent years. Nothing like the 60's though. Texas clings to that history more than anything.

Vegas would pretty much suck for any one under 21, if you figure a recruit is 17 or 18 coming out of high school they would pretty much be a senior before you could have any fun in Vegas.
The campus is pretty average and the stadium is way the hell out side the city.

I would disagree with that, Purdue is known as Quarterback U

I always thought that one of the New Mexico colleges should be better than they are. Bordering Texas, Oklahoma & Arizona, along with California one state away, you would think that with even the left over recruits from that area, they would be more competitive. Although, there are a lot miles between those areas too. IDK, I may be way off.

It's amazing that KU was a top 5 team just a few years ago. It was sort of a fluke, but damn they were still pretty good. That actually reminds me about USF, another team that somehow pulled a few absolute studs out of their arse and made a run at the top 5 before falling back into oblivion. There is really no reason any big Florida university should not be at least .500. No other state can match that. Texas has the talent, but nobody wants to go to Lubbock.
