Loquats (Japanese Plum) in Baton Rouge?

Anybody grow these around the Baton Rouge area? Going back to Morgan City every year and seeing these trees full of fruit makes me miss them, and I would love to try and grow some. I've just never seen any in BR.
Also, do any nurseries around here carry them?

every tree i see in town is absolutely loaded when the season rolls around. most people let them rot. i'd ask before i went around picking in people's yards though.
best bet to buy some is to go to a local fruit stand. i've never seen them in a proper grocery store.

All the trees I've seen have very small fruit just starting to show.

Next time you see a tree, grab some and throw them where you want the tree planted. It would probably work. Underneath my mom's tree there are 100 little trees coming up underneath. It doesn't look like they take much to get going.

i sprouted 4 trees off a relatives tree and they are growing like gangbusters in my yard in hammond now.
they are 3 yrs old now and about 12' tall. the biggest one just started to flower this past winter but not enough to fruit. i'm hoping this will be the year

The article says seedlings take 10 years to produce fruit... It makes me sad that peiple with trees rarely pick them

Havent seen them in BR. But I have a tree in my front yard in LC. I ate one off of it last weekend, but they probably need another week or so on the tree. If you find in in BR let me know.

You can grow them in CenLa, so growing them in BR shouldn't be a problem....I would say that any nursery should have them...

Wow, the memories...growing up we had one in the front yard. During the ripe season, I'd climb all over that thing everyday after school and gorge myself. Good times.

Had 2 big ones in my yard in Alexandria. Should be easy to find in BR.

There used to be one in the back of Kamado's posting lot on Bennington. But sure if it's still there though.

There is one in highland creek. Used to rob it blind at 3 am after Fred's.

This. Also used the tree to get on the roof of the house and subsequently get in trouble for jumping, falling, and throwing things off the roof. Ahhh, good times.
