Yep. I am ok with this. And I bet if the mother would have calmly sat her son down and explained it, he would have taken it like a champ.
Do any of you know what it feels like to have a child that you know will never have his/her own car, apartment or house? Some of the special needs people do not have a great outlook on the rest of their lives. Be happy that you don't have extra hurdles to jump when dealing with everyday tasks and let a kid have some joy.

its an iron on letter on a jacket. its not a fricking purple heart or congressional medal of honor. I guarantee there is nothing in that school's dress code about wearing a jacket with the school's letter on it without having earned it.
Nice strawman. She couldn't be bothered to take any time out of her day to even make a phone call to the school. I'm not saying the school is in the right here, I'm saying she did some shite wrong too.

i bet not
listen son
"i know it's not fair and you had no control over being born with down syndrome but simply put you suck at basketball because you aren't normal"
"yeh mom i understand, thanks for clearing that up"

Like a varisty letter actually means anything. Who gives a shite, let the kid wear it.

That being said, Mom should not have just gone out and bought one for her kid without even checking with the school.
She probably didn't give a frick because it is a piece of cloth ironed onto another piece of cloth that will get hung in the closet forever by May.

I don't think I ever even ironed on most of my stuff. I couldn't even tell you where the jacket is anymore.

nothing says "entitled thug POS" quite like tailoring clothing worn by high schoolers in order to make your special needs son happy. what am I reading?!
Everybody gets a trophy kids! Everyone gets a participation sticker today! Everyone's a winner! No scoreboard here at our gym! Hoooraaaaay!
The thing that gets me is that you think this lesson or issue impacts just the Downs kid. What does it say to the kids who tried out for the team and didn't make it. Or the end of the benchers who didn't play enough to even get a letter?
Everybody gets one! Just buy whatever letter you want!
Achievement is about earning something. It teaches a lesson to those who do earn something, and to those who tried and didn't earn something, and even those who never had the courage to try.
Whether you think those lessons don't matter or not. Whatever.

You mean by completely disregarding the school that's teaching her son? It's a fricking phone call, and she didn't even bother to do that, but the second the school said something she ran to the media.
And ask them what? "Can I buy something and iron it onto something else I paid for?"
And let's be real.. the school would have said yes to avoid controversy anyway. So the dickhole who wrote the note would still have written the note. And we'd still be here.

God I hate this argument, IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE STRUGGLE, DON'T TALK!

Oooooooooooooooooooh.
I completely misread that. I thought the school told her no, and then she wrote a note to the media. In fact, I believe we gave one to a special needs child when I was at Live Oak. I actually yelled at him once, because he got too close to the sideline and I almost got impaled on his wheel chair. I apologized for like a solid month after that :(
I was wondering why the hell the school would care. Oh I couldn't and wouldn't give to fricks less if they gave a special needs kid a varsity letter.

no, i'm just apparently far less ignorant as to the mental capabilities of these patients than you are.
some can become very high level function individuals. some absolutely cannot. there is a spectrum.

Yeah the mom should have cleared it with the school. But do you really want to punish this kid with downs syndrome all because his mom didn't call the school? It's just a letter that to most people means dick within months of graduating HS. But to this kid that letter will probably be a valued and important memento for the rest of his life. All those other kids are going to be able to go and do a lot of things this kid will never have the opportunity to do. So what does it hurt to give him this letter when it brings a bit of joy to his life?
Posted on 3/27/15 at 10:02 am to LouisianaLady
quote:Nope, you are wrong. In many of the schools I work with they have specifically setup programs for the special needs students to letter. It was a great way for them to be on the team and get a letter in their own way. That is how this should have been handled. Im telling you the downs kids that function the worst or the ones with the crazy parents that cant accept reality. This mom may not that, but it sure sounds like it
And ask them what? "Can I buy something and iron it onto something else I paid for?"

If you consider a varsity letter as an achievement, then I hate to tell you this but you aren't going anywhere in life
