Where did I say it was ok or advocate in drafting Gregory?

I say I'd love it if he dropped but I think SP and Co might pass on him too. I hope not because he's someone we could really use.

People need to let this pipe dream go. Payton has been preaching about leadership & accountability all offseason. They are not taking a risk on a player who may not be able to be accountable.

if the only bad character flaws he has are marijuana related and you think he is a special talent, I would not drop him too far down my board if I had one.
This is the only statement I disagree with. Because he failed at the combine, he is on strike 1 already. Its a calculated risk that I could not take at 13. 31? Maybe. But even then, I'm not sure. Which is why I'm typing on a message board and not preparing for the NFL draft.

Yeah he's already in Stage 1 of the conduct policy. Just 2 frick up and there goes his season. No thanks on that risk.
That's not true.
He has been referred to the substance abuse program.
Next positive marijuana test will result in a two-game fine, 3rd positive test a four-game fine, 4th positive test a four-game suspension, 5th positive test a 10-game suspension and finally after his 6th positive test (5 more after the combine) he will be subject to an automatic one-year banishment.
ETA - people on here seem to be operating under the old policy. Gregory can test positive 2 more times and still get no suspension.

He's going to need to nail some interviews with teams for them to have faith in taking the risk on him. Already having that strike is a big step back. I think he has a lot of potential, but I'm not sure I want to use a pick on a player that fails a test during the most important time of his career and life. Shows poor judgment and the Saints are trying to veer away from these types of players that seemingly have on or off the field issues.

shite, I forgot that the policy was tweaked a few months ago.

If that's true, then it's not as big of a risk as I thought. He will likely still be able to go in the low 20's, late teens IMO.

Under the old marijuana policy, sure it would be a big risk. However under the new policy he has to test positive 3 more times before he gets even a 4 game suspension.

Although i would love for him to fall to us, I really think this has a lot of meritt.

This is true but Gregory is still subject to more test than a player not in the system which means more chances to fail for other substances. It also means he cannot smoke anymore which he admits to doing for several years now.

That's a risk I would easily take if I think he is a top 5 talent. Again, he needs to test positive 3 more times to get a suspension. Domestic abuse/violence character flaws would scare me a whole lot more than marijuana smoking at this point.
Someone like Dorial green beckham would scare me a lot more with the incident of pushing his girlfriend down some stairs in combination with the drug tests.
ETA - I also believe the marijuana policy will again be revised in the next 5 years as the NFLPA will push for lessened penalties. Eventually it will be removed from the banned substances and will only be tested to provide help to players like in the NHL.

Good point. You are right. I had forgot about the new policy. Still a risk at 13, for me.

I'm having a difficult time finding the updated policy, but IIRC, the next test he fails he will be suspended for two games. I wouldn't be mad if we drafted him, nor would I be mad if we passed. But, a player who has failed multiple drug tests in college, and is already in the first phase of the program before being drafted, isn't a good sign.

the risk is moreso in the locker room and team related than just him missing games. he has displayed a specific disregard for authority and severe lack of maturity, and this is what Paeyton is trying to clean up from this team. if he is going to burn trees before a known test, then he is someone they may have a difficult time trusting in the locker room.

Yep. Forgot about this. But still all off-season the Saints have made it clear they're prioritizing high-character guys and want nothing to do with the opposite. It'll be interesting to see what category Gregory falls into for them.

I am not advocating for Gregory as I honestly have no clue what kind of player he is. The failed combine test is a red flag for maturity and decision making. However, the teams spend a lot more time and resources investigating that. If they think he is a top 5 talent and will mature, I do not see the suspension risk as that big of a deal based on the new policy as well as anticipated further lessening of the marijuana related penalties.

Drug SOA Policy
There is a link in that article to the new policy. Look at Appendix G (last page of the document) for positive marijuana test discipline. It goes like this:
1st test - into program, no fine
2nd test - 2 game fine
3rd test - 4 game fine
4th test - 4 game suspension
5th test - 10 game suspension
6th test - 1 year ban
