Wife possible victim of identity theft

She attempted to file her federal income tax last night on turbo tax. When she submitted the return, it was rejected with the message: "A return has previously been submitted to the IRS using this social security number." We already have been given instructions, such as : She has to make a report to the sheriff's office in the morning, meet with the fraud division of the IRS at Citi Place in a few days once the sheriff's report is completed. She's already contacted the SS administration, and her bank, and credit card service. Can anyone think of anything we might be forgetting?

I always wondered how this works. I assume the criminal makes up figures to get a return, right? How do they get the money and get away with it? How is the return even accepted without supporting evidence?

I don't understand why the irs needs someone to file a report with local authorities, seems like a needless step

The same thing happened to me last year. Had to go to the IRS building and file an affidavit.
The fake return was filed to a BR address here but the lady wouldn't show me the address...security measure

The sad thing about TurboTax and other online filing software is they are open Teller windows to the U.S. Treasury.
Go to a CPA or any tax filing place and they are required to do due diligence on your return. And have proof of ID.
"Where are the dependant's parents? Did they live with you the entire year? Who judged the dependant to be disabled? ..."
None of that exists in the DIY tax world and the ID thieves are making out like train robbers with no sheriff in sight.
Make the numbers pass the sniff test, get $4500 loaded on a prepaid card. Anywhere in the world.
Rinse & Repeat.
The IRS matches employer data AFTER the refund is sent. Crazy.
Online filers should at least have to prove identity with a Notary, CPA or registered document checker and get a computer generated approval pin before their return is allowed to be accepted by the IRS.

Your wife gave your tax return money to Tyrone. He has a huge black cock. Just give him the dough and pretend it never happened. It will be cool until next year when you have to deal with Marqyise. He eats pussy. This will be a problem for you. Plus he is packing much meat. You need to lawyer up son.

I'm going through the same thing and Turbotax were no help. You should file a credit alert with the credit companies. If you do it with one they will notify the other two. I went with Equifax. It's a 90 day alert in case the thief tries to apply for credit they will notify you. Also each company will send you a free credit report you need to review. You have to request the reports.
Last I filed a fraud report with the Federal Trade Commission online.
This has been a big pain in the arse.

Happened to me 3 years ago. Have her start the process with the IRS ASAP. They are slow as molasses and don't keep you informed well at all. Took me about a year to get my return and get it sorted out. She will now be issued a pin for every year in the future.
Sucks man.
