anything calling a timeout there allows the refs to put the clock to at least .3 seconds where something is possible.
Holy shite. Nothing is possible with .3 seconds.

He had already given up.There isn't a credible coach at any level who doesn't call a timeout there.
You have no idea what youre talking about. There is no shot to do anything with .1-.3 seconds lefts

This! The horn went off before Jylan even got in shooting motion!

quote:Not true, rule says the ball has to be tipped on the inbounds throw in with less than .3 seconds. Very difficult, but possible. You also have the chance of being fouled on the tip.

It's called the Trent Tucker Rule in the NBA, but the rule is consistent at all levels.

The worst part was that after Martin grabbed the ball from the made basket, he and everyone looked at Jones who just blankly stared back at them.
The look on Martin's face was pretty heartbreaking when he grabbed the ball. He was like man wtf

Yeah, but was it enough time to get fouled and miss another free throw?
Posted on 3/21/15 at 1:49 pm to mmcgrath
yep no matter how much the Jones defenders want to ignore this fact, Jones got caught up in the emotion instead of doing the smart thing which was call the timeout. Sure we likely still lose but at least he would be aware enough to give his team any scrap of a chance.

It would have been difficult to get the shot away at anything less than .5 but they could have crafted an inbounds play to hopefully draw a foul. Set a couple of screens and hope a defender runs overs someone. It would be great to alert the officials to what they are doing and hope they are alert to catch it if the defense falls for it.
They can't miss eight free throw in a row , can they?

This team really should've practices free throws after the Auburn game

With all due respect, do you really believe they don't shoot free throws?
Just remember prior to missing the final six they were 12 of 16 for 75%. Four of five starters shoot over 70% for the season, Mickey is at 66%. Gray is at 54%.
Even in the worse case scenario there should be no reason to expect 6 misses in a row. It happened. Its an aberration. Maybe karma will bring that scenario in their favor in the next few years.

we probably would have. I look at jones failure to call the timeout here much like i look at les miles failure at ole miss the year before last. It isn't what cost us the game, even if they execute it properly its not likely at all. However, them not being aware of the situation drives me crazy.
I agree, we could have at least tried to draw up something and draw a foul. Jones seems scared to use a timeout or even speak to officials.

Oh yeah that would have been great, especially considering the only thing this team sucks at more than free throws is inbound plays.

Do something. What if there was a goal tending and Coach Jones didn't call a timeout that would allow the refs to review the play?
You can't review goal tending bruh.

you can blame the coach and some blame is deserved, but:
11 missed Free Throws did us in...
Free throws do 2 things ..BESIDES the obvious points
a) it demoralizes the team trying to catch up if they are made
b) it encourages the team trying to catch up if missed...and at some point, it puts DOUBT in the player shooting the free throws.
I saw players "aiming" their free throws at the basket, rather than "shooting" them...
they seem to believe that there was a greater chance of missing them, than of making them.

Or maybe in you opinion Coach Jones was thinking "Screw these guys. They missed all those free throws. They don't deserve to win. I sure as Hell am not going to call any timeouts to bail them out."
Wtf are you talking about? All I'm saying is if free throws are made down the stretch then LSU would have won the game. NC State made the shot with literally .1 left on the clock. Even if it is moved to .3 you can't catch and shoot.
Posted on 3/21/15 at 3:07 pm to heartbreakTiger
There's no play to draw up for a full court pass tip in. The game was over after the made basket.
And what kind of play do you draw up to draw a foul? This is a ridiculous criticism.

You're right, you can't catch the ball and then shoot it. But you can tip the ball with less than .03 seconds. The time out should have been called. The op is probably right that .05 seconds would have been placed on the clock. JJ should have set up a play setting a screen down the court to try and pick up a foul. If you don't get the foul, throw the ball the length of the court and try for a miracle shot or tip depending on what's on the clock. Any coach with half a brain would have at least called the TO.

How the hell do you know that??? True, it's low odds, but we had time for a long pass and turn and shoot. At least give us a CHANCE.
Another example of Jones' poor in-game coaching.

Jesus, Jax. Nothing??? Really???
0.3 is enough time for a turn and shoot, according to the rules. At least heave it to half court and throw it up. Even if we only had 0.1, throw it full court and hope for a miracle.
Just don't quit.
