Was it just a matter of the British not being able to devote their full resources to fight us?

I know in school we were always taught about the advantage we had since we were fighting where we lived but often things like that are way oversimplified and Surely we wouldntve won without the French?

Don't be worried about hijacking this thread as we can use it for a general history discussion if that ends up happening, I've just always liked history threads on here and there are some very knowledgable posters, the other day a few mentioned they wished we had more threads about this war

We fought dirty. It wasn't "gentleman like" to ambush the other sides' soldiers in the woods and have soldiers "sniping" commanders. The British didn't fight like that and we did. It is pretty much the most successful job of guerrilla warfare in history.

That and the French lending us a lot of help.

No idea either, can't be easy to wage a war across the Atlantic back then though. Logistics of it are pretty incredible

we didn't "win" it, we just made it more costly for them to keep fighting than to give us independence

Same reason Afghanistan cannot be beat by Russia in 1980 or beat by USA today.

a British officer said "because they just won't go away" Washington knew that the most important thing was to keep an army in the field. That meant sometimes retreating to fight another day. As long as he could keep an army fighting, the British resolve would wear down. Oh, and the French fleet!

British soldiers didn't really want to be here in the first place. They lacked motivation to fight

We actually got our asses kicked the entire war so we just drained their resources and will to fight to keep the colonies and they just said frick it, y'all can have it. Sort of like the guerilla style war that has bit us in the arse from Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Maybe the British just had enough of us. Probably thought it wasn't worth the hassle to try and subdue a bunch of hillbillies living out in the sticks.

I thought it was because we hid in the woods and sniped them.

It all started when a young man went against his father's wishes and joined the resistance. The father, a once famed military man now farmer, wanted peace and diplomacy, not war. But, war was inevitable. His son went off to join the Revolution.

One day, the father heard someone enter his home during dinner. He grabbed his pistol. It was his son! He was injured and tired from war. His son was a messenger whose charge was to deliver correspondence for the Colonies. More injured men came, British and Colonial alike. The farmer cared for all.

Soon, the British found his home. A ruthless commander, indifferent to the care the farmer provided for His Majesty's troops, killed the farmer's sons in an act of cruelty and cowardice.

The farmer, once compassionate and nonconfrontational, returned to a dark place he promised to never revisit. He swore to avenge the death of his sons, and much, much more.

And that, my friend, is how we won the Revolutionary War.

Britain was fighting a world war and North America was a minor theatre in the conflict.

More like they couldn't adapt their strategy to the situation. Britain had dramatically more resources. They had enough to win. But they consistently employed traditional battlefield tactics to fight the elusive, guerrilla-like Americans.
