The O line has been a major issue with the Saints.
It needed to be improved for us to have success.
Brees was harassed all year, and that was reflected in the overall record of 2014.

I strongly disagree with anyone that thinks it has been the skill position players that have been the issue. This is assumed because our offense has been "failing" and the WR numbers are down.
2013 it was glaring our WRs couldnt get open.
The Saints offense is totally different when they dont have
A) explosive RB out the backfield(Bush/Sproles),
B) Colston(or a big WR) in his prime
C)A WR with the rapport and "feel" Lance Moore had with Drew Brees.
quote:
Just watch how high the WR numbers are this year without Graham sucking up targets and the Oline fixed.
It's not even about numbers. It was about just seeing with your own eyes that these guys weren't as good, and the offense didnt flow like it does at its best..
Of course their numbers will be higher without Graham. I also think we are in better shape now than we were in 2013, since we've added Cooks and Stills has progressed. 2 Young guys we can lean on, but both are on the smaller side. We still need to find a replacement for Colston to fill that big WR role, and someone that can catch the ball out of the backfield

There's hope for us all...reporting facts is not dead.

On the separation issue, WRs need time to separate(some more than others). Do you think two and a half seconds is enough time to consistently get separation?
And yeah that's the worst part that despite him getting the ball out quicker the pressures still went up. Evans did fall off a cliff starting in 2013.
And when I said steady decline I meant the line as a whole.
Brown was a steep decline. Evans has been in a step decline. Center has been in steep decline.
But despite being no Nicks Grubbs has been good in pass protection (but is a shitty run blocker). Armstead has fixed our LT woes. Strief had the one bad year but got healthy.
So while there is some really bad, there is also some just a little bad and even some good.

True, but we have better receivers than 2009 IMO with Stills and Cooks.
Stills > Henderson
Cooks > Meachem
Colston < 2009 Colston
Moore - only played in 7 games in 2009
I was just speaking in general, not really about 2009. Moore was hurt in 09', but that year was sandwiched by 2 great years by him.
Meachem was great in his role in 09, but he set us back because we needed him to be more than that over the course of his career.
With that being said, Brees is older, Colston is older, and our OL is different(and the guys that remain, are older). And we don't have a threat out the backfield at the moment.
It's hard to expect it to be "turnkey" like a lot of people think. It's just not the same.

They actually hit every aspect of the trade.
Both sides won and lost. Great analysis.

yeah too bad he wasn't worth a Sherman or Chancellor or a Thomas. That's what they needed!!!

Absolutely spot on.
The article also fails to mention that Graham was often injured and reportedly becoming a locker room titty baby. Those two factors alone make him expendable.

I think both teams did well in this. It'll improve both teams in different ways.

They gave up their best offensive lineman and also have a short QB.
It all depends on how they fill that hole. They've lost their 2 best offensive lineman this offseason

In the full season before being traded, Percy Harvin had 1300 yards from scrimmage and was also a kick returner
I don't think you understand the point he was making

They seem to have forgotten Graham was the best receiver on the team. Drew may now have a cleaner pocket but he no longer has a matchup nightmare he can rely on.
Bears repeating. But really, It'll be next Fall when this is as plain as the blank stares on the Saints fans faces.

Seattle will find another Unger before we find another Jimmy Graham. Stats alone the distraction and attention Jimmy Graham drew was just as significant, its not different than lebron being on the floor without the ball. It was the same with Reggie in '09 even though he wasn't arse effective and Sproles as well. You can make the improving foundation argument all day long. Doesn't take away from the fact that this offense (barring no addition offensive FA splashes) will be very pedestrian. Sometime you dont appreciate what you have until it's gone, everyone knows Drew loves to rear back and put up those jump balls and Jimmy always bails him out...maybe cooks will develop a 60 inch vertical during the off season who knows.

I think the star player comparison is correct, but this team is in win now mode and in all honesty, we need a solid OL. I think we can sacrifice a star offensive weapon to free up cap space, get an all pro center, and a 1st round pick.
If Brees has time, he can make the players around him. If he has no time, this offense struggles as we saw last year. The most important part of this offense outside of Brees is this offensive line. We can plug and play around that with average talent because Brees can make everyone that much better. That just my two cents.

What does that even mean? We've been a top offense for 9 years now. We need to become more of a conservative play action offense that protects the ball.

Everyone knows that Drew likes to spread the ball around and step up into a clean pocket. We threw for 5000 yards in 2008 with worse receivers than this.

You just don't get it. It isn't just a player for player trade:
1.) It fills our biggest hole with one of the NFL's best
2.) We get the #31 pick out of it, allowing us to fill a hole at ILB or G
3.) We save ~$18 million over the next 3 years in cap space with the trade
4.) The #31 pick may allow us to free up an additional $6-8 million in cap space if we draft a guard
So, we can literally get a pro bowl C, a 1st round G, and a corner for Jimmy Graham. We can get a pro bowl C, a 1st round G, and a player like Dwayne Bowe for the price of Jimmy Graham.
Jimmy Graham is a great player, but the offensive line is the most important thing in football.

lol you can't be serious. He played injured this year and STILL got double digit TD's and almost topped TE for receptions.
The Jimmy hate here is just ridiculous. "Locker room titty baby"? I don't know if it's true, but the dude played well on the field. Not every player on an NFL roster is going to be selfless Jesus Christ.
We lost a great player because we had to. Why? Because the front office fricked up. It happens, but don't act like the New Orleans offense was being held back by Jimmy Graham. That's just stupid.
