I do think it's rather absurd that a group of twenty-somethings feel comfortable chanting something as vulgar as this. But then again, you probably have a lot of sheep within that groups circle.

We don't know they didn't
If I lived there I'd be getting the frick out now. They are getting vandalized, news media is trying to get in the house, etc. I'd be very gone.

Dues go up if you live there, which most do at some point. Food is part of all dues for every meal. Parties are unreal fun and that is also a part of dues. You rotate parties with entire drunk sororities in slutty costumes, if you can arrange that as a non-Greek you are a god amongst men.
Then of course the post-grad connections can really help in some industries.

I went to Ole Miss and was in a major fraternity there.

No.
Sigma Chi did and they are top tier strong fraternity there. We had an Indian dude
. We gave a bid to the black guy too, as did most of the fraternies. He chose Sigma Chi. He was awesome. We didn't have a bunch of minorities rush. The ones that did usually got bids somewhere. There are like 4 or 5 fraternities at Ole Miss with black guys now. I have no idea if mine does though, I don't keep up with undergrad shite.

Dues also pay for the house itself, including repairs and whatnot. Also have to pay nationals if I remember correctly, but nationals use that money to pay for new housing and major renovations as well as scholarship funds and other events.
The "pay for friends" line is rhetoric designed to put down Greeks and elevate non-affiliated students, which I always laugh at. My non-affiliated friends gave ZERO fricks about me being in a fraternity and never hassled me about it except the good-natured jokes you often hear about pledgeship and whatnot. They never mentioned anything about me "paying for friends." Perhaps because none of them really cared to be in a fraternity. Those who do throw out that line seem to feel a bit left out, in my experience.
