Cox Internet questions

We have a pretty old router and modem and have Internet with Cox.
Someone said Cox just updated their internet stuff and ours might be going slower now and need new equipment. Any truth to this? I have no idea how fast our internet is or how to check or what we're paying for

Go to speed test and run the test to see how fast your internet is.

How do I do that?
From phone or desktop?

Begin test.
Do the desktop.
It is possible the modem is so old you can't get top speeds but tops speeds might not be necessary.
Have things been slow?
I was having to reset the modem and router often so I did break down and buy new equipment 6 months ago.

Go to the below link and put in your account phone #. It will tell you if you are eligible/ need a new modem. If so, the website will order and ship you a new one with no additional costs
LINK
Cox does not automatically send you an updated modem unless you ask them for it. I found this out when installing a new router for a friend and they were getting less than half the speed that they were supposed to be getting

From phone:
Ping-33 ms
Download-16.54 Mbps
Upload-7.52 Mbps
From desktop computer:
Ping-26 ms
Download-8.94 Mbps
Upload-6.97 Mbps
I have no idea what any of that means
I DO know that I'm having to reset the stupid modem and router like twice a week

Those are very slow speeds.
Look on your bill and see which Internet speed tier you are paying for.
Essential is 5mbps down.
Preferred is 50mbps down.
Premier is 100mbps down.
Ultimate is 150mbps down.
You are getting crappy speeds for anything other than the bare minimum essentials tier.

We pay for preferred (50Mpbs)
Cox website says the modem is outdated so maybe that's a start.

Yes. If you have an outdated modem that will definitely cause issues.
I would recommend this modem from Best Buy.
To install it, you'll need to disconnect your old modem and reconnect up the new one in its place, then call Cox and read them the MAC ID from the bottom of the modem so they can activate it for use on their network.

This is the modem I have and have been very happy with it, FWIW.
Great suggestion.

Agreed. I have it as well.
Also, I just recently had an issue where my internet speeds were well below where they should have been.
Switch out the coaxial cable, and everything was back to what it should have been.

You can find a modem on ebay for cheaper... You just need to be sure it's docsis 3.0 and you will be good.
The reason I recommended the more expensive SB6141 over other DOCSIS 3.0 modems (like the $70 SB6121) is because the SB6141 is capable of 8 channels downstream whereas most DOCSIS 3.0 modems are not.
While any DOCSIS 3.0 modem will exceed the 50mbps speeds of the Cox preferred tier, the SB6141 isn't that much more expensive and would be more future proof with max speeds of 340mbps whereas the others are only capable of 160mbps.

I also have the preferred from cox. You can rent a modem/router combo from them for $8 a month extra on your bill or you can buy one for about $100. You probably have the older analog modem docsis 2.0. They upgraded to a digital 3.0 within the past couple years.
If you buy one yourself I would suggest the Motorola Surfboard cable 2 in 1 Modem/Router combo you can get it from bestbuy or Amazon. If youre big into gaming don't get the 2 in 1 modem/router combo though, for some reason it's better to keep them separate when it comes to serious gaming so it would be best to get the standard docsis 3.0 motorolla surfboard modem and buy a separate router.

Well I think most people wouldn't really notice the slight performance loss from having a 2 in 1 modem/router and it's easier to deal with

The numerous threads regarding the subject, disagree with you

What router would you recommend to go with the SB6121 or SB6141?
