Looking for a good brand that slices potatoes along with other vegetables and can be purchased from a local store instead of online..Thanks

I would check out Bed Bath & Beyond.

I would buy one with an extra guard. Or one that cannot be operated without a guard.

well that's just silly.
If you want safe, get a Sweedish mandolin.
If you want ultra thin and infinite adjustments, but the chance of losing a finger tip..get a Japanese mandolin.
Borner
The Borner is excellent, just doesn't have the control settings and thinness of the Japanese style.

You can probably find the OXO Good Grips V-Blade Mandoline Slicer at Target or Bed Bath for about $40. It was a past winner in a Cook's Illustrated equipment review.
They did a new test last year. Oxo was still recommended, but the highly recommended models were Swissmar Bo¨rner Original V-Slicer Plus Mandoline and Kyocera Adjustable Slicer with Handguard. Those are listed for about $30 and $25.
I don't use mine much. I just have a cheapo that I've had for years. Works fine. No trips to the ER yet, but I always worry when using it.
