I thought Grubbs would be a better candidate to keep out of the two, based on what I've seen on gameday for the last two seasons.

If I had to say who CAN play better I would go with Evans.
Grubbs looked better last year but I thought got pushed around the year before.

grubbs has looked bad since he signed

Possible both can be back if Jahri takes paycut and Grubbs does a restructure or so

After what we saw last year, do we really want them both back? I guess if you can negotiate to keep them for around what their dead money is, then it doesn't hurt for depth. But we should really be looking to get some new blood in there whether it's Lelito, a FA, or a rookie.
All 3 interior spots were pretty bad last year. Hopefully Lelito can win one spot, another won by a FA or rookie, and since I'm guessing we'll keep one of Grubbs and Evans, they can hold down the 3rd spot and hopefully improve from last year.

You'd want the best of the two back, for sure. Depending on where they put Lelito (probably Center), you'd be dealing with two years of experience between the entire interior line. Throwing out an entire interior offensive line like that is something you do in a rebuilding year, because that type of decision is a risk to any quarterback. Any year with Drew Brees under center should be treated like we have a legit chance to win it all.

Wasn't Evans hurt last year? If so, I agree with keeping him over Grubs at a reduced contract. Regardless it is nice to see confirmation that they are addressing the Guard position. Grubs has never impressed, and he has been playing poorly as of late

My thoughts exactly.....Plain and simple, we were bad on the interior last year and keeping any of Grubbs/Goody/Jahri does not make us better at those positions....I have always like Jahri and the way he goes about his business, but we need an upgrade at both G's and C

How does keeping at least one veteran player in a rotation of new players not improve the position? Players have to learn somewhere, I'd rather them learn from someone like Evans. It's one thing to hear it from the coaches, it's a completely other thing to hear it from a decorated peer. You also cannot discount his long history with Brees, which has a direct impact on at-the-line blocking adjustments.

Everyone knows that. But you have to consider depth and experience in the whole equation, and I guarantee the FO is currently doing that. Every active player on a roster is worth something. Evans/Grubbs have a cost associated with simply cutting them, so it would make the most sense to negotiate a new contract (which the Saints appear to be doing) with one or both of them.

I'm hoping the saints wanting to keep jahri implies more about what they know about his previous health and health moving forward. I hope Saints are intending to keep a better jahri than Jahriof past 2 years.

Agreed. I think they'll keep at least one of Grubbs and Evans. Goodwin most likely won't be returning at the starter, and 3 new starters is too much turnover.
For anyone who watched the Office, the headline of the NOLA article ("Cap-strapped Saints were prepared to release Pro Bowl guard Jahri Evans, now negotiating to keep him, sources say") reminds me of the Halloween episode in season 2 where Michael goes to fire Creed, but Creed convinces Michael to fire Devon instead.
quote:
Michael: I have to fire someone today, okay? Creed: Fine. Fire someone else. Fire Devon. He's terrible. I am so much better at my job than Devon.

Exactly. shite, if both are willing to play near what their dead money is for this year ($5 mil for Jahri, $6 mil for Grubbs), then why not keep both, even for depth? The only problem is that these guys may not be willing to take that much of a pay cut, and not be a starter. There's no way these guys make what's left on their contract in an open market, but they could both still start for another team somewhere else.

From what I can tell about Jahri's work ethic and personality, he would seem to be the type of guy that knows he has not performed to his salary level the last two years. Injuries or not, a team is still paying you to perform at a certain level. If he takes a lesser contract, he will show he is committed to the team's future. If he takes the cut (and the remaining guaranteed money), he's probably come to terms with the fact that his injuries are catching up with him.
It's a pretty good decision for the Saints to force the issue and force Jahri to choose what he wants to do.

Sorry I somehow missed this one and didn't comment. I will say outright, I have been pretty down on the Grubbs signing after year 1. I agree mostly with this, however someone pointed out in an old thread (I'd be lying if I said who) that his performance was dramatically improved when Armstead replaced Brown in 2013. I'd love to see some data (if there is any) about the relationship between Grubbs' performance this year in relation to when Bryce Harris was in at LT. I for one do not think it was any coincidence that we lost (most of if not all of) the games where Bryce Harris was listed as the starting LT.
An offensive line is only as good as the weakest link.

Grubbs and Evans were not good last year (I really think Evans has injured) but Goodwin was the biggest weak link. Still confused how he continued to play over Lelito.

One of the two guards needs to go and the other needs to renegotiate. All 3 of them played poorly last year. Grubbs never has played up to the billing, Goodwin looks done, and Evans was said to be injured. Cut Grubbs, don't sign Goodwin back, and restructure Evans. Draft for competition with Lelito who hasn't shown much to have faith in, though he may turn it on.

Tells you what they thought of Lelito last year.
I always thought Senio looked better in limited time last year than either Grubby or Evans

Glad to see someone else noticed Kelemete. I really think he could step into a starting role this year.
I'm not surprised by this news about Evans. There's a big dead money hit if we cut him even if we save more than the dead money. It would be best if we can get him to take a pay cut like Harper did where he plays for around the dead money number.
Grubbs may stay at his number as his dead money number is big than what we'd save cutting him. No way he stays on next year's contract though.
Hopefully we drafted a center and let him and Lelito compete. That would be 3 young interior linemen on the roster even if only one starts this year.

I'd be perfectly fine with spending the 1st on BPA and spending the 2nd on a center. Let the guards ride out this year and replace one (Grubbs) in 2016.
When they were all healthy in the second half of the year, with DLP, they were above average in 2013.
