Seems like most people have Matic's back after Barnes' horror tackle

quote:
Gary Neville: "Matic completely entitled to react and not a red in context of what happened to him! "
quote:
Piers Morgan: "Matic sent off for shoving the thug who tried to break his leg? Ridiculous."
quote:
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson said: ‘The referee gets it all wrong. You have to use common sense, as Barnes could have broken Matic's leg and so the natural reaction is he’s going to get up and push him. And the referee did not even book Barnes, while he did caution Ivanovic for arguing.
'Surely the referee should not have seen it? But if he does, he has to send him off though. He had a terrible game, with two stonewall penalties missed as well.
'For me, I am not sure what you are meant to do and I think everyone in the world of football would have that sort of reaction, as you are going to be frustrated.’
quote:
Darren Lewis, of the Daily Mirror, wrote on Twitter: ‘Push from Matic is a reaction to almost having his leg broken. Instead of dismissing him the referee should have been protecting him. Tackle was shocking. I’d like to see the footballer who doesn’t react that angrily to almost having his leg broken.’
quote:
Matt Hughes of the Sunday Times wrote: ‘Barnes’ escape offended the principles of natural justice, particularly given subsequent events.’
quote:
Craig Burley: Understandable reaction from Matic. Tackle fro Barnes was a leg breaker. Atkinson having a nightmare.

I like the red card because that means Matic will miss the Capital One Cup final...
In all seriousness, I think it's bullshite.

It would have been interesting seeing these same people's reactions if Matic's leg was actually broken, and Barnes got the red. I vividly remember the defense of Dan Smith, Martin Taylor, and Ryan Shawcross when they broke three Arsenal players legs...it would be interesting to see if the pundits would say that Barnes was "not that sort of player" when he was pretty reckless throughout the whole game.

I sincerely hope I'm wrong but he is the most irreplaceable player at Chelsea I can remember in recent years. First game he missed this season, the unbeaten run ended. He sat out against Bradford, complete and utter embarrassment. He's the glue that holds everything together.

Good, was worried he might get jumped or sucker punched.

Matic covers for Fabregas, who is pretty clueless in his defensive positioning. Matic is probably the best DM in the league, with the way he can tackle, cover ground, and bring the ball out of defense into midfield. His passing is more than good enough as well.

Can someone post a video of this tackle?

Cry me a frickin river. Jeez the persecution complex continues.....

IMO he and Busquests are the best right now. They both allow players to play with freedom ahead of them.

Matic definitely gives Harry Kane a run in the mouth breathing department. Dude never has his mouth closed.

I didn't at first, but after watching several replays, Matic's reaction wasn't all that surprising. He usually seems pretty level headed and calm (for a Serbian).

Still should be a red card to come at a player and push/knee him down regardless of whether it's warranted.
As a Roma fan, I often wish just provocation were a reason to allow us to punch and kick players without getting carded but I've never seen it happen.
Players keep taking the huge paychecks to come to the EPL where you see these kinds of tackles happen and go unpunished much more than other top leagues-- or better: happen so often because they so frequently go unpunished and you even hear pundits defend the guilty players, if they are English, since they never really "mean it".
I guess players have to take the good with the bad until EPL officials start being more liberal with the red (and yellow) cards but I doubt they need hold their breath either. Hope they're buying some insurance with the fat paychecks.

This is the first time I've been aggrieved with the officiating after a Chelsea match this year.
That said, you can GFY.
Shouldn't be surprised the two biggest douches on the issue are named "EastNastySwag" and "McsomethingBoo69".

And the defense of British players who pull this bullshite is hilarious and depressing. Crazy brings up a great point that tackles that actually do break a leg get defended more so than those that could have broken a leg.

Aggrieved about a game? Sounds like priorities are in order.

Weak.
Actually, I don't even think you know what the word means.

I've already said it was a dirty challenge, but it was a yellow at most in my eyes.
You can use the "if he broke his leg" argument as much as you want But he didn't.
The only thing I have a problem with is his reaction, which like yours Saturday with the name calling, was childish.
If something like that happened to Aguero I can just about guarentee you that he wouldn't have reacted like Matic did because he KNOWS his importance to City's success. Matic holds that team together and he may have cost his side dearly.
