Was in the same boat about 3 months ago and kept looking until I eventually just raised my price threshold and got a Dan Wesson Guardian.

Strictly speaking on functionality and reliability and to answer the OP's question, no you cannot justifiably spend the extra $700 on the Kimber and improve that drastic in performance. I would get the Ruger and spend the rest on ammo (or get two Rugers ). You will be very happy with the SR1911, but you would also be very happy with the Kimber.

Or a Ruger and a H&K VP9.
After firing somewhere north of 1,000 rounds from my Ruger SR1911C I really can't see how or why people love to spend so much money on 1911's. Aside from aesthetic touches like bobtails and beavertails and any other tails you want to throw on there I just couldn't justify it. I'm a pretty awful shot, historically, but I can drive nails with the Ruger at a reasonable distance. I can appreciate the lightness of the S&W Bapple posted, but the new aluminum frame Ruger matches it for $600 less.

I'll admit I don't have a Ruger 1911, but I've had enough Ruger's through the years to appreciate both their quality design and reasonable pricing. If you're looking for a "Commander" size 1911, I personally think the Ruger will be hard to beat. If this is going to be a gun for cc, do yourself a favor and get the lightweight frame version. The Kimber will cost more and have a prettier finish, but it won't be more functional. I too like the bobbed 1911's but I haven't been able to justify the extra $$ it takes to buy one. For me, the Commander size handles better than the full size or compact.

The only thing I'm beginning to hate about a 1911 is how many damn options and opinions there are, and I do not even own one yet. I feel like I'm about to fall into the trap my AR set. My first one led to wanting about 3-4 more and a lot more money spent.

Oh buddy, get ready. I only have one 1911 (S.A. Range Officer) and I now have approx eleven 1911's that I have on "the list" now. Just such a sweet shooting gun and great design.

I started out carrying a Colt Defender and love it, but once I bought the Colt "Wiley Clapp" Commander, I switched to carrying it daily.

quote:There's some truth there!! Let's see, you'll need AT LEAST one each of the different sizes of 1911's--full size, Commander, Officer, and at least one "wild card" e.g. bapple's "Commander hybrid" (I can never remember the real name, but "Commander hybrid" is an accurate description), an alloy frame, a full size w/ rails, etc.
