Cop needs to be fired.
The issue is this: the kid was neutralized at the point several closed fist punches were slammed into his face.
The cop was ON TOP holding him down by the throat with the weight of his body. The kid was done no matter how much he "struggled". Anyone who has actually fought knows that.
To me, flailing on someone in that position with concrete against the kids head is a sign of rage, not control.
And before people starts defending the cop for acting in the "heat of the moment" ask yourself this question: why doesn't the kid get the same benefit of the doubt? They were both in that moment.

Well I guess he should get "paid" a little but I don't think more than about 10k. The "kid" has some responsibility for this...cop should be fired. He won't get jail for that though.

quote:I agree. The cop should be held to a higher standard than the average citizen in a fight. when the threat is neutralized then its time to let off. The cop got mad and went into rage mode.

How many times has an incident like this happened in the past before cell phone video cameras , and it was just passed off as the cop doing their job and the criminal was resisting .... Cops have to understand that we are in a new age with new technology, and they better start acting like they are trained to instead of like barbarians with badges
The kid is not without fault, he should of been arrested , but not beaten
Strike 2 for the cop, Jefferson Parish would do well to part ways with this hot head before anything worse happens

While I somewhat agree with you the diff is one is breaking the law other is enforcing the law.
The enforcer always wins.
Nature vs nurture... You get the point.

bullshite. A police officer is trained to handle high tension situations like this. The general public is not. The cop shouldn't be given any kind of pass for being in the heat of the moment. Where was his procedure? Where was his training? I don't care if the kid called his mother a cocksucker, that doesn't give the cop the right to do what he did. Was this kid a threat? What public was he protecting by beating up a couple of kids?

yep, the kid isn't blameless but that doesn't excuse the cops actions like the bootlickers want.

The officer is also trained to identify himself, which he will have a very tough time proving he did. Because he didn't, until after the punish and things started.
After talking with a few kids that were with Becker,I still can't understand why a grown up man, let alone an officer would get in a war or words with teenagers to begin with.

cops brain function is on par with high schoolers so that could explain it.
Also not the first time that i have heard JPSO not Id'ing themselves.

I didn't see this posted anywhere but this is the officers report.
The whole situation is stupid. The officer is not a well trained professional. Before anyone says police are trained to deal with stress, just save the bullshite for people who don't know any better. Their little training academy simply does not have money to screen and train these guys. You absolutly can not teach someone how to handle themselves in a stressful situation in the time allotted by the academy.
quote:
-As the detectives walked near a crowd of 20 to 30 people at 9:38 p.m., they saw and heard several people shouting, "F--- the cops." The detectives made contact with the group, identified themselves as members of the Sheriff's Office and told the crowd to leave because the parade was over.
Becker was in the group. The detectives walked away in hopes the crowd would calm down and leave. A few seconds later, the group began chanting the same refrain. Becker was screaming "F--- the police," joined by about five or six others.
-The detectives identified Becker as the "main instigator" of the chanting, causing others to become irate and aggressive towards the deputies. Because the group seemed to be out of control and refused to leave, the detectives again approached Becker, still chanting.
-This time, the detectives smelled alcohol and burned marijuana wafting from the crowd. Breaux again identified himself as being from the Sheriff's Office.
Becker then pushed Breaux in the chest, saying, "F--- you, pig." Breaux grabbed Becker's arm and told him he was under arrest. Breaux tried to put Becker on the ground in a "prone position" to be handcuffed.
Becker began punching Breaux in the face and chest with his free hand. Breaux responded by punching Becker in the face several times "in hopes of gaining control of his violent behavior."
-As Breaux held onto Becker's arm, others in the crowd began to punch the detective on the side of his head. Becker and Breaux continued to scuffle, still on their feet at this point.
-Breaux and Becker traded punches for 10 to 15 seconds before he was able to bring the teen to the ground. Breaux continued to try to cuff Becker as Poche pushed away others in the crowd.
-While on the ground, Becker reached for Breaux's throat. Breaux grabbed Becker's arms to break the teen's grasp but resorted to punching him several times in the face and eye. Becker let go and Breaux got him into a prone position to be handcuffed.

The whole first 2 lines do not match what will be testified to in court. The idea that kids would randomly curse the cops is absurd.
The cops I know are pretty pissed off about this. It makes their job harder. It's going to be interesting which cops lie and support his report and which don't.

well as a cop part of the job is handling stress. I don't think anyone would believe that isn't part of the job. Since it is part of the job you are expected to make the correct decisions and even when you don't you aren't suppose to go all rage mode on a suspect.
Id suggest better training and more training once they leave the academy. when you are charged with up holding the laws of the land and protecting citizen you have to be held to a higher standard.

The kid probably didn't do himself any favors but I doubt a bunch of kids started swinging on cops like the officer claims. If a judge reads the officers report and and doesn't roll his eyes in disgust then our problems are far worse than shitty training.

Yep, like usual the truth is in-between the cops report and the kids version. the kid did something stupid and should have probably just gotten a ticket and maybe a trip to drunk tank for a while. Instead the cop over reacts, and goes all hulk mode on a non threat. He would have been fine just getting a little rough with the kid in arresting him but smashing his face in crossed over into unprofessional.
Cops seem to have an issue about level of threat and their safety. The other kids are probably lucky he didn't start going pew pew pew pew on them for standing around.

They use the excuse to explain all of their wrongful actions.
Kids can tell what they want. Cops should walk away. It's not illegal to yell. Cops took the bait but they are the "trained" ones.

So...how much of Breaux's report is compete bullshite?
Posted on 2/22/15 at 11:16 am to LNCHBOX
Kid is a piece of shite and deserved everything he received. The mother is also in denial that her precious son would never do anything wrong except consume a few alcoholic beverages.
