Following last week's news of a mysterious Apple-leased vehicle roaming the streets of Northern California, an Apple employee has given some details to Business Insider, suggesting Apple is working on a project that will "give Tesla a run for its money."

After writing about how the van could be used for a self-driving car, we got an unsolicited email from an employee at Apple about "vehicle development" at the company. [...]

"Apple's latest project is too exciting to pass up," the person said. "I think it will change the landscape and give Tesla a run for its money."
According to the site's source, who was verified to be an Apple employee, Tesla employees are "jumping ship" and choosing to work at Apple because of this unidentified project.

I hope it is not running on iOS 8.

Apple Aiming to Begin Electric Car Production in 2020

quote:

Apple is hoping to begin production on the car project that it is secretly developing as early as 2020, reports Bloomberg. According to the sites sources, Apple is pushing employees working on the car to have it ready to go in five years, a timeline that will eventually allow it to compete with similar electric vehicles coming out from Tesla and GM in 2017.

The timeframe -- automakers typically spend five to seven years developing a car -- underscores the project's aggressive goals and could set the stage for a battle for customers with Tesla Motors Inc. and General Motors Co., both of which are targeting a 2017 release of an electric vehicle that can go more than 200 miles on a single charge and cost less than $40,000.

Great, ...

Will only run on Apple Tires

Will only run on Apple Batteries that can't be changed so you have to get a new car every 3 years.

Can only be serviced at an Apple store

Will cost twice as much as comparable cars.

Will only use Apple Maps, which, as completely inferior to Google Maps, will run cars off of roads constantly.

I've got some graphs that prove that 1 horsepower for apple results in more performance than 3 horsepower for tesla

TouchID brah.

So if you buy Apple Care, will the car be covered for an extra 2 years....for a total of 3 years of warranty?

Also if there is an issue with the car, do I just go to the Apple Store and they will hook me up with a new car in less than 10 minutes?

Of course. That's cause it's all about the torque, not just horsepower.

Apple Working On Project That Will 'Give Tesla a Run for its Money'

Tesla is an electric vehicle maker, and while I'm sure they have self driving projects like every other car company in the world does right now, why would a self driving car give Tesla a run for their money?

Also, this seems far beyond the scope of what Apple's good at. Apple's primary strength is business, not technology. They made the MP3 player work by bringing in the music industry. They made the Smart Phone a thing by taking a business product and polishing it up for consumers. They are good at taking existing tech and refining it or getting the right business partners involved.

Self Driving tech seems a bit too new and incomplete to be getting the Apple treatment. Is this not about self driving at all and about battery tech? That would make more sense to me.

This would be a massive reach for Apple.

I don't see it either. They work on shite all the time. They take out patents like crazy.

Doesn't mean any of it will ever see the light of day.

Apple has nearly $200B to work with in capital. Nothing is out of reach for them if they truly think it makes business sense to pursue.

I think the whole "give Tesla a run for its money" thing is being misinterpreted, and it's probably about the two companies competing for employees rather than Apple working on a product that directly competes with Tesla. The article mentions Apple offering Tesla employees 60% salary increases and quarter million dollar signing bonuses. Apparently Tesla has some really great employees.

And just last week the exact opposite was being said, that Apple employees were jumping to Tesla and Apple was very hard pressed to stop the flow of talent.

Apple Recruiting Automotive Experts to Work in 'Top-Secret Research Lab'
quote:

Apple is recruiting automotive technology and vehicle design experts to work in a new "top-secret research lab," according to Financial Times. The report adds that a number of Apple designers working under design chief Jonathan Ive have also been regularly meeting with automotive executives and creators in recent months, and even trying to hire them in some cases.

Financial Times claims that Apple may be developing an advanced software platform that builds upon the CarPlay dashboard system, although its sources claim that the background of the individuals that the iPhone maker is hiring suggests that the company may also be in the early stages of working on a car to compete with the likes of Tesla and Google.

But people familiar with the company said that the background of the people Apple is hiring — including automotive designers and vehicle dynamics engineers — and the seniority of the executives involved suggest a car could be in the works.

“Three months ago I would have said it was CarPlay,” said one person who has worked closely with Apple for many years, referring to Apple’s infotainment system. “Today I think it’s a car.”

They could also just buy Tesla (market cap -~$25B).

Apple has $83B just in current assets ($19B in cash). From their latest 10-Q filing:
