Monty Williams appreciation thread

shite on him all you want after a loss but on a night where he gets another undermanned team without its starting PG and PF to beat a top team in the West and he gets nothing? I want him gone too (maybe not as much as most) but I give credit where it's due. That man does a hell of a job motivating this team when it's down to play up to better competition.
Now if only he could do that against Boston, NYK, etc.

No get his team to beat sub .500 teams first

So you're on the fire Steve Kerr bandwagon?

I will never claim that Monty isn't improving as a coach. It's the damn pace at which he's learning and the floor he started from that drive me mad. If this was year 1 I'd be alright with him and maybe even pleasantly surprised right now that the team is playing at this level. The problem is it's year 5 and I'll be damned if I'm willing to risk the next 2-3 years with him to find out he's still an idiot. There's quite a few other things going on that coincide with winning lately. Monty gets his share of that praise, but he doesn't get the majority just because people crap on him all the time.

This is why he's such a shitty coach. He can get the team to play up to competition, but he can't motivate them to beat teams that they are better than.

lol no he doesn't. There's 10 threads on him after a game and sometimes by fricking half time if they are losing/lose. But after every win, this board says nothing about anyone except the players. That's part of being a head coach I guess. But monty has been good this season and in the past at getting his team in a good position to win against better teams. Now it's figuring out how to motivate them against the others.

I give him props on those good wins, but there's two problems with this.
1. He can't consistently beat better teams
2. He can consistently lose to worse teams
That leads to being sub-par in records most of the year. No point beating OKC/Hou x2 if you lose games to NYK, Boston, Philly, Denver x2, and Indiana

Boom roasted. Thats it.
If we were just a bad team thats one thing...but we see the talent this team has in games like last night, beating a team that we probably should not have beaten with arguably our 2 best players (one being a top 5 player in the league) sitting on the bench.
I understand that even the best teams have off nights and I get that, but good teams would never lose to the 76ers, Nuggets, and Knicks in a two week span
Monty has been better and I applaud him for last night but the losses against bad teams is what gets me...those consistent types of losses scream team immaturity and subpar coaching
Thats my complaint

Meh, winning 5 of the last 6 games doesn't change the last 4 years.
Playoffs or fired.

QM, your point is based around the fact that Monty is a world class motivator against good teams. Which may be true. However, giving players the blame for playing down or up to opponents is equally plausible. I don't judge him on the quality of losses or wins, so I'm not speaking for the board. I'm speaking solely for myself. The Monty subplot is something I pay close attention to and despite my perceived "melts" on here about him, I feel fairly objective. I'll expound on last night:
- BAD: the TO called when the crowd was roaring and we were up 9-6 early in the first was dumb as nails. I popped into the game thread during that TO and commented on it I thought it was so dumb. Lo and behold, the Clips come out of the TO and go on a 7-0 run.
- GOOD: the shorter timeouts for the rest of the game when the Clips would make a run.
- GOOD: resting Asik when Jordan would sit. Keeping Ajinca on a short leash when Jordan returned.
- GOOD: Staggering Gordon/Evans in the 2nd half.
- BAD: hero ball and clock draining offense late again.
- GOOD: Evans the distributor, including a back door cut by Cunningham for a dunk with the game on the line.
- MORE GOOD/SOME BAD: the perimeter defense. Gordon and Evans are so strong they allow a ton of flexibility with who they guard. We took advantage of that last night. The bad part was how often our bigs ended up guarding guards on the perimeter.

Pelicans had zero business winning last night. Some of those awful losses we without Jrue/AD. Without those guys, they're hardly an impressive roster.

this is an appreciation thread. i'm not reading monty bashing.

Lmao in the OP you say you want him gone, but any analysis (which is mostly praise) isn't welcome? Come on man.

I've always been sort of the fence with Monty, I guess. There are some specific things you can bitch about (weird rotations) and some specific things that are not so fair (an inbounds play that doesn't work . . . and we can't truthfully be sure of the reason).
Part of the problem early this season was on the players for various reasons, imo. The losses to inferior teams are real head scratchers to me. If the team finishes this season strong and, yes, in the playoffs. Then makes at least a respectable showing before bowing out, he does deserve another year. I know that would drive some people crazy.
