If so... How does it work? Is it affordable?

Leads for what kind of work?

I saw an ad online for "free bankruptcy leads" for lawyers. I called and it was $400/month for their service.

What are you selling?
Don't pay a company for leads, pay a competitor
Don't pay a company for leads, pay a competitor

What ever you respective profession is. Whether it's construction, sales, etc. Just wondering if you actually get good leads to make money or if it's just a scam to get your money.

Lots of money if you want the Glengary leads.

That's more commercial is it not? I was more interested in the residential side of the spectrum. For Electricians, Plumbers, General Contractors, etc.

I use data.com, not necessary for leads but to find the right person to contact for a meeting.

Some are OK, but nothing replaces a good sales rep.

Work at a law firm that pays for leads. Cost about $50 each and convert at about 15%. Typically a $3000 fee so it works out. Can be a pain in the arse wading through them though. They come in through email and through direct connect via the phone. The direct connect convert at a higher percentage. If you do pay for leads, try to get exclusive leads and don't bother with aged leads. Those are a waste of money in my opinion.

I worked down the hall from an insurance salesman who worked on purchased leads. He made a living, but he worked his arse off calling folks who never panned out. I must've heard his opening spiel a thousand times just walking down the hall. He purchased two kinds of leads: "Verified" ones from a company he repped, and "non-verified" ones from just some internet site. He was getting a 7 or 8 percent closure on the "good" leads and under 2 percent on the others. FWIW.

That's good stuff. When you say aged leads, I assume you mean leads that have been posted but no contact has been made? Are there more direct contact leads compared to aged leads? Direct contact, especially with a trades profession, seems like the right way to go.

interesting...until I saw posts by you and sabi. I really had no ideat that you law firms could purchase leads...
can you purchase leads by case type (i.e. bandruptcy, personal injury, etc?) or is it just general leads?...

That's a very good point. I thought it could potentially cause a conflict of interest with other parties. They're the lawyers, not me. I was more curious about the general construction leads. Again, I'm curious and saw the links on Google while in the office the other day. Just thought I would ask.

I have a good source for Contractor leads that will give you a 68.7% ROI using an SEO platform and the company has a partnership with a large home provider. What's your email? I'll fill you in on the details.
