It's called a pop. How in the world can you call it a Coke? Let's say you go into a restaurant and want a Mountain Dew. The waiter asks what you want to drink and you say you want a Coke? Makes no sense.

The only time the word pop should be used when talking about a coke is when you want a Pop Rouge, which doesn't exist anymore. So your argument is invalid.

i think yall are confusing what we mean. We don't answer coke-"what do you want?" A coke. We question coke- "welcome to my home, would you like a coke to drink?"

If you're at a restaurant, when the server asks what you want to drink, you answer specifically. You don't the say coke so he does a back and forth, you skip that step.

Yeah, it was Coke in the South, it's pop or soda up here. If you order a Coke you'll get Coca Cola.

Like someone else has replied, when the waiter/waitress asks what we want to drink, if we want a coke/soda/soft drink/pop, we order the specific drink, e.g., Dr. Pepper.
Just like if the waiter/waitress asked you what you wanted to drink, you'd likely ask for the specific kind. Or would you say "pop" and make them ask you to specify?
It's not that confusing of a concept.

Cold drink/soft drink. If I ask for a coke and you hand me a sprite or dr. pepper instead, I'm going to think you're retarded.

Coke > Soft Drink > Cold Drink

Rarely say soda, and never use any version of "pop."
