I don't see a need for it. Back in the day though, shorthand was part of the 'business' curriculum and only females took it. Someone wanted to dictate a letter, the secretary took it down in shorthand and typed it for the boss.

Here's an example.....

I've never seen that goddamn tomfoolery in any school I've ever been in. Keep it away.

Gregg shorthand was the most popular, if I remember correctly.

I didn't know they ever did. No one uses that anyway outside of journalists and secretaries.

I know a few reporters who still use it for post game quotes. Much faster than listening to a recording when you're working on an 11 pm deadline after a game that ended at 10:15.

My Grandmother used to write my birthday cards in a similar form; I always thought it was due to her shakes.

Court reporters hit the 5 keys on those machines and can read a question back from those marks on the page. It's crazy.

I don't think it'd be too hard to learn to read it, but to write that in real-time...

I can type steadily at about 105wpm, but I can't write fast with a pen without my hand cramping up in two sentences.

No it isn't taught anymore. I took shorthand and used it during tha 13 years I worked in the business field. Sad that schools don't even teach cursive hand writing anymore either.

Years ago colleges offered degrees in "Secretarial Science". My late mom graduated with that degree. Till the day she died, she could write and transcribe it. It was also amazing to see her type 80+ words per minute on an old manual typewriter.
She had some great stories about secretarial pools at military bases during WWII.

That looks infinitely more difficult than just writing things down normally.

This would have been a lame thread 30 years ago. All the ballers with dictaphones would have been laughing at you.
