be careful in phillipsburg St. Maarten. Locals are extremely good pick pockets.
Yeah I heard the Dutch side is pretty rough. The French side is much more nice I've been told.

I have experienced it the opposite. The Dutch side is where the large cruise ships unload and phillipsburg has an area right by the docks that has all the shopping etc that you would expect. In that area there is extremely high amount of pick pocketers and purse thiefs. The French side is great during the day (I highly recommend going and seeing Marigot) it is extrememly nice but turns into west africa is a matter of a few yards. On either side of the island do not leave anything in your car (if you rent one) and do not drink and drive on the French side (you can on the dutch).
As far as pick pockets go. I bought a cheap wallet and put a note in it that said get a job. I put that in my back pocket and I carry cash and a credit card in my pocket.

I was on the Getaway Jan 3-10. I haven't sailed NCL in a while but it was a great ship and had a good time. Enjoy!

Did you ever bring your passport ashore?

I live on sxm. I didn't think about the passport. Maybe get one of those passport carriers that goes around your neck and hide it under your shirt. Once you get away from the cruise ship area the pick pocketing is not as bad. So just realize that you are a tourist and you stick out like a sore dick in the wind and just use good common sense and you will be fine. I am sure the cruise ship company has good advice.
Attractions that I would consider must sees:
1. Marigot and Fort Louis
2. Sunset Bar and Grill: grab a bucket of beer and watch the planes land. KLM (the big blue one) land between 12:30 and 1.
Beaches (all topless by the way) that I have been too
1. Orient bay is gorgeous (but be aware there is a nudist colony and it is fully nude)
2. The beach where the cruise ships let out in phillipsburg
3. Maho beach (nex to sunset and the airport)
4. Mullet Bay Beach: it is the closest to where I live and it is beautiful but there are better beaches on the island
Shopping:
front street in phillipsburg
Marigot
Blue Mall in cupecoy (extremely expensice though)
Dining:
depends on your budget and what side of the island you are on
Jimbos-simspson bay. Happy hour specials and swim up bar in the restaurant. Really good Guavacolida
Buccanneer Beach Bar-simpson bay
I am sure there are some good places in phillipsburg but I haven't been
Princess Casino (right by the new bay bridge) has some really good restaurants
There are wonderful restaurants on the French side but they are pricey.
Adult Entertainment:
Platinum Room is closed the hours that your ship is here so you will miss out on that.
The legal brothels are open but I haven't been so I can't give you a review.

I have heard some good things about the new NCL ships. NCL will continue to get better now that they are under Frank Del Rio. You will enjoy yourself on the cruise

From what I've read and heard, the cruise operator takes each passenger's Passport upon boarding the vessel at the initial embarkation port and keeps them in a shipboard safe until the passengers disembark at their terminal destination. If this is true, security of passports whilst passengers are on the sheeple herd visits to interim ports is not an issue.
Anyone clarify this subject?
PS: To the OP, as to joining on a "Royal Norwegian" cruise, there ain't nothing royal about it, the King of Norway ain't gonna be there and neither am I.

Been on a Royal Caribbean and several Norwegian cruises (all Caribbean destinations), and they've never kept my passport. I carry mine with me at each port, but that is a debatable topic. If you miss getting back on the ship at a port, the protocol is for the crew to open your safe in your room, and leave any documents with the port authority before sailing. Fortunately, I've never had this happen, so don't know first hand.
I've heard that some higher end cruises actually keep your passports, but I've never experienced it. It may be more practical on some the European cruises where a passport is needed for different ports. The closed loop Caribbean cruises, you don't even need a passport.

Never heard of a Royal Norwegian cruise.
