Why the Gray hate?
For me, its not so much hate on Gray, rather hate that I believe he should be a bench player right now. Tim Quarterman is possibly our most electric player and I would like to see him starting...
Not to mention Jalyn Patterson has ZERO turnovers and ONE foul in his last 5 games, (23mpg).
Gray has 18 turnovers and 15 fouls in those games, (30mpg).
I just think its time for a change in rotation, that's all.

Q hitting 6 threes against Georgia won us that game, but it also I think gave him a false impression that he's a better shooter than he really is.
No doubt Quarterman has improved dramatically on offense from last year, but I do agree that he thinks he's a better 3-point shooter than he actually is.
He was red hot against UGA, but aside from that game, he's only had 3 other games this season over 33% on 3-pointers.
Since the WVa game (not counting UGA, where admittedly he was fantastic) he's only been 6-32 on 3-pointers (19%). Since UGA, he's been 1-4 and 1-6.
I'd like to see him drive more to the basket, particular against smaller guards. He can draw more fouls that way, and he's been very good from the FT line (79%)

I really like patterson and his 0 turnovers is really impressive along with his shooting. But I dont think he can create for everyone else as well as gray can. JP cant Penetrate a zone as well as gray can.

Over last 5 games, Jalyn Patterson has 10 assists and 0 turnovers in 116 minutes of action. That's crazy.

Well I really don't think we need Patterson, or whoever our PG is to create for others. We're already loaded with guys who can create. Maybe just a ball handler is what we need at PG to control the dang rock!

Patterson and Gray don't do the same things though. Patterson plays a lot off ball and isn't asked to drive into the lane or split double teams.
Patterson is doing way above expectations, but he's being handled correctly by the coaching staff by not being thrown to the wolves.

Absolutely. They do totally different things. I like them both for what they bring. Patterson is more like Anthony Hickey where he doesn't turn the ball over, but he doesn't make things happen either. Having him play off ball has been really good. He makes good decisions and has been making shots lately.

This is where coaching comes into play. We cannot assume that he just plain can't do things based on what he has done. I'm still excited about the trio we have there regardless, but I would love to see a change. We're clearly losing games we should win largely due to lack of ball handling.

These guys have trouble creating against a zone. Coaching or basketball IQ whatever the reason they all have trouble and we result to shooting 3s. Gray can get by his man and penetrate and dish better than anyone on this team. Thats why I think he is our best option at PG with Patterson being a solid backup PG and good decision maker.

We only have two options that I've seen. We do some high/low from FT line to post that does work some.
We also are able to get some open looks at 3, but we're not a good enough shooting team to rely on that (look at this past weekend).

Zone O is just awful if we aren't hitting 3's. That is why I think if we go stagnant we should just press or set up some Half court trap defense to get some turnovers and get some guys flowing.

The way I look at it is this:
We have 5-6 guys who are really good college players. They all could be the star of most teams out there. Getting them to play together requires some discipline on the court, which most of our guys clearly lack. I think our PG position needs to be the pacemaker or showstopper if you will. He needs to demand the ball and orchestrate the offense. What Gray brings is more of a quick-scoring option, which is very useful at times.
However, I think Martin and Mickey should work in tandem off the ball while our PG runs the show. I just see too much chaos with Gray at the point.

Let alone all the D-1 Power 5 games you watch, where they look space-age compared to LSU in half court sets..
I'm watching Women's Hoops right now, Tenn-Notre Dame..the Irish women have a far greater Hoops IQ than LSU's Men in running sets.

I often wonder why players never get blame? Zones are created for a specific reason...to make people shoot. The problem with LSU is we have plenty of players who are just willing to shoot a deep 3 and not work for a better shot. The only person who consistently drives into the lane during a zone is Gray. Then he turns it over 1 out of 3 possessions and people go batshit, so then everyone says it's ok to just launch 3's. Our options are Gray try to penetrate and make something happen, or we just bombard from 3. FWIW, this is where I believe if Martin was an All-Star (like some predict), he should be able to create. 6'10 with great athleticism, but shoots jump shots. Hornsby also needs to attack more because he is so strong and quick.
TQ used to drive, then he went 6/11 against UGA and now he's a jump shooter I guess. I want the TQ who played with a chip on his shoulder, not the NCAA player of the week who is 3/13 with a 3:5 TO ratio since.
Our team has a ton of problems, Josh Gray having a 5.2/3.5 Ast/To is not the biggest. I'll also point out that Gray's Ast/TO ratio is 1.5, whereas TQ's is 1.2. Gray definitely turns it over too much sometimes, but the problem is people only want to see what they want. Every year LSU fans have to hate on somebody. He's shooting 42% compared to TQ's 44%, averages more steals, and has a better assist ratio. TQ for sure plays better lock down D most the time, but the gap between the 2 has not been that big, and TQ is winning awards for his play and Gray is getting shite on.

Oh I agree. I think the OP chose a poorly worded thread title, as I think most LSU fans take more issue than any single player or single team problem.
Gray just happened to make that last TO, thus the thread was created.

I've seen plenty of blame parceled out to players, but kids will be kids, they do what they can get away with. Our kids seem to be getting away with much more than they should, repeatedly..same things over and over.

The team plays better w Patterson in the game at point guard

Patterson has barely played any PG all season. Quarterman normally plays PG when Gray isn't in the game. But Coach Jones likes combo guards that can play off guard or with the ball in their hands. Either guard can take the ball up court.

There's no reason we are so terrible at zone o other than the coach. There's nothing complicated about beating it. Move the ball, penetrate, find the open spots at the elbow and the short corner. Passing the ball slowly around the perimeter will eventually lead to a long three. The ball needs to get inside, but most importantly, the ball needs to move quicker, much quicker than what we do.
quit catching the ball 4 feet behind the 3 point line, can't run an offense from there.
A team plays zone b/c they either are too nonathletic to play man, or they know their opponent can't shoot and are poorly coached. Every team we play sits in a zone most of the game. How we haven't learned how to beat it is beyond me.
