I lived up there from 07-09 (deployed a lot, though). Great city. I will say that it is pretty gray most of the year and obviously gets a lot of rain. But the summer months in NW Washington are absolutely phenomenal, the food scene is good, and I'd put the music scene up against just about any in the country. Plus you're within just a couple of hours of Vancouver, BC and Portland.
What kind of salary increase/promotion opportunities are you looking at? Cost of living isn't crazy, but it's a good bit higher than the deep south.

If you are moving from anywhere in Louisiana I'd say do it. Especially if you don't have a lot of family tying you down or anything.
Duck.

This:
Also have a friend and her husband that moved there about four months ago. They love it other than the rain and cold for the last month.

All of the real Tiger fans went up there for the Washington game. I was only there for 4 days but I thought it was a VERY cool city.

Here's where it is in case you are thinking of walking or driving to it:

Are you single?
Do you have kids?
How much more would you make? Because I'm betting COL is higher in Seattle than where you currently are.
If the answers are Yes, No, and a lot, then I don't see why you wouldn't do it. Big world outside Louisiana, might as well take the chance and live somewhere else while you're not tied down. Just one man's opinion.

its pretty fricking expensive to live in the city
when me and the wife were planning on moving up there, we were looking hard at Ballard and shite...we would have been house poor with half the house we have now

No way I would make that move.

After living in Germany, Bahrain, and now DC, I guess I'm just a little bit desensitized to cost of living.

Great city but it rains A LOT.
Annual rainfall is about the same as the Gulf Coast. It just mists for weeks at a time instead of coming in downpours.
Summers are glorious, though.

Been twice including the week of the UW game. Had a good time both times. Do it!

Portland is home of the most and best craft breweries in the country.
That's literally all I know about Portland, and it's also all I need to know to tell you that you should be leaning towards Portland.

Rex says that everyone should move at least 4 times in their lifetime. So do the smart thing and knock one off the list.

Just got a job offer there and it's a pretty decent job but that's quite the move. Figured I would ask and see if any of you had any advice or know how of the place.
After visiting, I wanted to move there. My wife and I both got jobs in Houston instead
