Loyalty?
You are living in the past. The average career of young folks today at the same company has dwindled to 5 years. I have no problem with people bettering their lives by taking other jobs if it benefits them. Chavis is a prime example. Not happy about how he left but understand him feeling he needed to go

Well yeah, opportunity for advancement within is something every new hire should look for. If that opportunity isn't there, then of course you can use a position for experience to take somewhere else.
But, in the case of Smart the fact that it is common knowledge the reason he wants out at Bama is so he can get a head coaching job somewhere has negative implications for LSU. You have to sell the program and sell yourself to the kids and families of kids you are recruiting.
While any successful Coord brings the potential for advancement somewhere else the difference between it being assumed and said is significant IMO.

Telling people you want another job so you can use that job to get a better job doesn't make you ambitious; it makes you look uncommitted and it's the first thing that will be told to recruits by other schools.
kids aren't stupid and realize that's part of the game now. You're really making a bigger deal out of it than it actually is in recruiting. How many recruits did we lose when Chavis left 2 weeks ago?

Meh. That can just as easily be spun the other way in recruiting. The best are in demand, and our DC is one of the best. Come to LSU and take the opportunity to learn from him while you can.

I have no problem with it either; it happens and is a part of any successful program. But there is a difference between having someone leave for a better opportunity and hiring someone who has made sure it leaked that he wants to get out of his current position and into another position so he can move on to a head coaching gig.
The problem here isn't that Smart wants a head coaching gig, it's the fact that he said it and made sure it leaked.

Winning sells the program, period.
Even if it is said, that doesn't mean he might not be open to staying and enjoying his time here. At least with him you'll know upfront and LSU can get the best guy available come that time. I just hate how Chavis left this late and find it absolutely perfect for right now to get a guy on par with him.
Of course it is ideal to have a guy for several years, but this tends to not work out as often as most would like.. Plus if you do make a bad hire, that guy is fired within a year or two any ways.. You want to make this best hire for right now given all the circumstances IMO. Give me the proven guy in the conference with a tremendous track record every time against the unknown.

Like I said, it's just an evil I would just assume not deal with. Now, if we're talking about promoting Peveto or huring Smart, give me Smart...but I am assuming things would be mostly equal in the hire and I expect LSU to make a good one here and one that can easily be sold to recruits.

At least two that we know of (Phillips & Amadi) right now and possibly a third with Mack.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Five-star defensive tackle Daylon Mack recently backed off of his commitment to Texas A&M and announced a top two of TCU and LSU. But after learning that LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis left to take the same position at Texas A&M, Mack had a shake up with his future plans.

Zero fricks given about Amadi
I don't think Mack was ever coming to LSU.
Phillips cooled on LSU when Chavis left.
I got 1. One recruit. ONE
Posted on 1/13/15 at 2:33 pm to MrWiseGuy
One recruit who was never committed to us. He very well may have, but UT would have been a big factor all the way up to signing day.

Oh, well since you don't think Mack was ever coming to LSU I agree we shouldnt consider him. Regardless of what the kid said...
Posted on 1/13/15 at 2:35 pm to LSUfan4444
Mack wasn't coming here regardless, same goes for Phillips.
Even if I gave you those kids (I'm not) you still came up with a very small number his departure had an effect on.

He would be enrolled in school right now.

We're talking about top-notch out of state defensive lineman and Brick Haley.
Lets get real, people.

yeah since they haven't been known to totally bullshite or anything
You can hate the Smart hire and that's fine, but your reasoning sucks.

he might get the LSU HC gig in time

So, we lost coming in second for two guys? frick

Yes, that has been established. We should disregard what they said because it's quite obvious Amadi and Phillips lied to LSU and Mack decoHow many recruits did we lose when Chavis left 2 weeks ago? mitted from aTm and had no interest in LSU....my bad
Whether you "give it to me" or not, LSU lost it's DC who was barely involved in recruiting and lost 1-3 players out of class that currently sits at 16 people. Argue all you want how good Amadi was or how interested Mack may have been but when Chavis left it removed any possibility of LSU landing anyone of them.

Yeah. Forgot about him being an EE. However, the point still stands. He never switched to us.

So you believe we had a shot at Joe McKnight and Cameron Robinson too?

Thankfully my reasoning doesn't have to satisfy anyone on TigerDroppings other than me. I'm not trying to convince you that he is a good or bad hire.
