A few years ago I was fishing from the bank of the Amite River in DS/Central, down by that spot where a lot of people to to go hang out, drink, party, and swim before they built the new bridge and made access more difficult. Anyway while I was fishing several times I saw a strange creature come up and "roll" on the surface of the water. It stayed underwater; it would just come up and roll every couple minutes. I think there were two, actually. I had no clue what it was -- the owner of the property told me they were river otters. Another guy said it was a porpoise, and another guy said it was 2 river catfish spawning. My memory is somewhat hazy but from what I remember it was dark-colored and had hair and it wasn't a nutria. Anybody have a clue? (And no it was not Bigfoot or aliens).

How do you know it had hair but wasn't a nutria? If you could rule out nutria, I would imagine you would be able to see what it was. I've never seen otters in the Amite, not saying they aren't there, just never seen them.

There are a million BIG gar in the Amite, they roll a lot.

I guess the could've been gar, but I could've sworn it/they had hair. Then again, I was probably drunk. From what I've seen of nutria, they swim on top of the water for the most part. Whatever this/these were stayed under the water and didn't come up for air. Gar sounds most plausible.

Pretty much any mammal out there would swim on top for at least a short while (Nutria, Otter, Beaver) I am pretty sure you would be able to identify any of them. The only thing that rolls that often is Gar, and the river is slam full of them.
