How do you get a lock-on high enough? I thought screwing any spikes into trees was a no no.

I use a climber but know a few guys that use lock ons. I had planned on putting one up when I was hunting WMA if I ever found a spot I liked and wanted to hunt on a reg basis
You can use them as long as you take the bottom section out with you making it unusable and your stand is tagged.

Lock-on
First year deer hunting. Wife isn't ok-ing any expenditures for future hunting if I don't produce meat this weekend.
You guys with climbers- you walk out and hang those in the dark?

Climbing sticks, something like lone wolf. I'm not sold on installing the sticks and stand in the dark, but the pro is that you don't need a straight tree without limbs or forks.

That's what they're for. You don't leave anything in the woods.

Ole Man for the win....

Definitely a climber. I like a summit cause of the back rest.
People steal stands on private land, the last place I'd leave a stand is on a WMA even with a pulled bottom stick, they can bring their own and take get it.
I never understood why people would risk put cameras out on public land either.

Ground hunt only in wma's

Both, but mostly my climber. You can leave stands in the NWRs is you follow the rules.

Stand can not be left in huntable position. Lock ons cannot be used unless you take down every evening. So climbers are best option on wma's.

it's not a big deal if you hide your shite well, like in a big knockdown or something. i agree though, when i see stands on the ground or just hooked to the tree i have to shake my head. but i do a lot of scouting on WMAs and i see a LOT of stands out there.

I prefer a climber over a lock-on on public or private land. I have never felt that good in any lock-on I have used. And I don't like using the sticks or spikes to climb. I just feel way safer in a climber.
x2 on hiding your stands. I've had stands locked on a tree WAY back in the woods, where I didn't think anyone would run up on it. I was wrong. They shot through the cable lock and took it... Some peoples children.

I use lock-ons now. Always used climbers until about 2 years ago. A decent lock-on with a decent set of climbing sticks will weigh as much (maybe less) than a climber and can be set up in nearly the same amount of time. Plus, you get the benefit of being much more versatile in the tree that you can climb. I find that its much easier to get in a tree with adequate cover if you have a lock on.
If you have the $$$, I'd recommend a Lone Wolf stand and sticks, but I mainly use the cheap Game Winner stand with Muddy brand climbing sticks. Make sure to get shoulder straps for the stand and then secure the sticks to the stand.

I use both.
I'll hang a lock-on in areas that I'm confident no one will find them.
I'll use my climber to move around and hunt more accessible areas.

I've never seen a lock-on that looked comfortable enough for me to sit in for 4 hours
