Pretty decent documentary broken into about 20 clips, and each clip is about 3-6 minutes. All on youtube. Start at the headwaters in MN, and go all the way down to the gulf.
The dudes are from California and had never kayaked or canoed, but it took them 60-70 days to complete the entire trip.
Some of the commentary is pretty fricking corny, but maybe that's just a Cali thing.

Looks like I know what I'll be watching for the next hour or so.

Enjoy Baw.
Would have been cool to do a trip like that on Summer Break during college.
Those dudes must have quit their jobs to be able take off that kind of time.

I'd imagine your 'yak would make it there before your body.

Don't do it. There's a post on this website about a guy that tried to kayak across the river and narrowly escaped alive.
If Conway Twitty swam across it to Loretta Lynn, I'm sure a yak can handle it.

Et 4 guys at the avenue pub last year who had just canoed from The origin of the river to nola. They went basically non-stop, slept in shifts. Made it in a few weeks.
That sounds like a waste of a good trip.

My roommate in college did it. Took them 3 days. They stopped and camped. Stay close to the shore, no worries.

True story, a couple years back two Canadians rode down the entirety of the river on kayak. They stopped a friend of mines land in north la, he gave them some beer and food.
People do that every summer. It is not that bad in reality as long as you are somewhat vigilant.

That's badass I watched every episode.

just don't do it till late in the summer when the water is down and you will be fine. I would recommend a canoe so you could at least have a large ice chest. It would take a lot of beer.

A lot faster than NO to BR.

Wouldn't take me very long.

We do Vicksburg to Natchez often and it can be done in a day, but we usually make it a two day trip. BR to NO would be a lot of barge traffic and lots of industry, it's a much more scenic trip a little further north of BR.

I've kayaked across the Mississippi River (east to west and back) before north of Baton Rouge and made it. When I was about halfway I realized that it was probably one of the dumbest things I have ever done. I had been drinking beer all day though and it sounded like a cool idea at the time. The current was rough and choppy and I had a barge bearing down on me so it was a memorable experience. I'll never do it again though. My shoulders were definitely burning. Kayaking down the side near the banks isn't bad at all.
