I'm looking at selling one of my cars online and I have never that before. Are there any tips or suggestions on how to go about it.

I am only accepting cash or cashier's check and am meeting them at the local mall. The test drive will be a set up route I have come up with and they will have to leave their car keys with my wife when we go for the test drive.

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

I've sold a couple on eBay. I never had to deal with the buyers. A shipping company always came to pick the vehicles up. Good luck.

Sold my Jeep on Craigslist a couple months ago. It went really smoothly. Got a bunch of spam, but it sold in 10 days to the 2nd person who looked at it. I'd say just make sure you're in a very public place during daytime hours. You can usually tell pretty well what kind of person you're dealing with when you talk to them over the phone and of course when you see them in person. The first person to look at my Jeep brought his wife and kid with him and they pulled up in a new BMW. They were looking to buy it for their son. I didn't even go with them on the test drive or ask for his license or anything.

Sold on CL. Easier if you are selling a car for a few grand than 20k or something. Most people don't have that kind of cash and although it's not hard, some people don't want to jump through the hoops of getting a loan on a vehicle private party (because you will have to get the bank to appraise) and all.

We are looking for $10k. I might just go through the cars.com or autotrade route but it is free to post on craigslist so if I can get a bite from there, why not.

Didnt sell it online, but I took my Dodge Ram to Carmax in Baton Rouge a couple years ago. They gave me around 3k under blue book for it, and I was out of there with a check in my hand in less than an hour. You can get an estimate from them that's good for 30 days. You dont have to sell it if youre not happy with their offer.

That doesn't sound like a good deal at all.

Let me get this straight, so you are taking them on the test drive while your wife steals their car? Are you also going to take their cash, or will you just drive back to the mall and play dumb about your wife?

Be scared that you will be robbed; fear is a wonderful tool in any negotiation.

Craigslist -- Email is the first line of defense. I can tell within three sentences if someone is worthy of response.

Sold my 2006 BMW on CL a month ago. Sold it for $450 above blue book. I keep my cars in good shape and had it shined up really nice inside and out. Went smoothly. Like someone else said, you can tell when talking to them if legit or not. Did not get spammed or any crazies.

Carmax offer was only good for 7 days, and they offered me less than multiple dealers on two trades. Ended up selling both vehicles on CL and came out making $29.5k on both instead of $18k at Carmax. Big difference

sold mine on craigslist.

I let them take it out themselves. They had to give me their driver's license while on the test drive.
