Question about my shot on a buck this morning? Help needed

I took a shot at a good buck this morning, Quartering to me slightly-mostly broadside. 300 mag. He hit the ground hard and staggered to get up. He then ran into the deep woods beside me. I waited 45 min to an hour. We looked for over 2 hours and no blood. We have smelled a thick deer smell. Maybe gutshot? What do i do? Its raining now Just about heartbroken
Thanks for the input

He got up from a 300 mag?

Call all your buddies, get one with a dog. An actual deer dog would be best, but any lab or outside dog will still help tremendously

Get a dog.
A blood dog would be best case scenario, but any dog has a better chance of finding it than you. I have a buddy who's lab will find them, just by being a naturally curios dog. It wasn't trained for that, but it works.

What type of bullet are you shooting? Maybe it did not expand. You have plenty of gun to do the trick. Is it lightning outside? If not I would go out and look. It's too warm to let the deer sit and the rain is/has washed away any sign of blood. It's now a race against the clock! Good luck

[downshift] Clearly, the 300 mag is a poor deer cartridge.[/downshift]

More of a gut smell. It's coming a flood now. How soon will scent be gone in the rain with no blood?

Anything is possible. I would try and find a dog as well if I could.

It's gone now, but what we are saying is take a dog down there and turn it loose where you last saw the deer go in the woods. Everybody walk around keeping an eye on the dog which should just be playing and sniffing around like a normal dog. If there is a dead deer within 100 yards of where y'all walk he'll likely find it, and want to chew at it or roll on it. Just being a dog in general...
Eta: Thus you'll have a greatly increased chance to find it by being smart with what you have to work with.

Also if you are comfortable with your shot (no jerking), go shoot your gun to make sure it is not off. That should be a good sign of if your deer was hit.

Your deer is dead and waiting on you to come find him.
If he went down, its unlikely that you gut shot him and more likely that you hit the onside shoulder, as you should have.
He likely ran 100 - 150 yards in a fairly straight line if the terrain is flat.
Last week, I shot one presenting what sounds like an identical shot, slightly quartering to. I clipped the back of the shoulder blade, and exited at last rib. I blew both lungs and he ran 140 yards. He was probably on the ground dead before I got out of the stand. No blood.
Found him in the light the next morning, everything was fine.

If you were smelling something any dog will likely find it. Don't sweat the rain if you weren't finding blood anyway.

Wait a couple of days and look for buzzards.
Seriously, if it is raining like it just did here, you are going to have a hard time finding that deer other than blindly stumbling across it.

If there is any water nearby, that would be the first place to check. They always go to water.

Every one is giving good advise. The deer is probably gutshot. That quartering shot is tough. There is a LOT of tissue to get thru if you shot a few inches back of the ribs depending on the angle he was quartered. Not uncommon to not find blood. There may be hair around there.
I have tracked several wounded deer and found 2 things regarding terrain: 1. If hilly, most will not go uphill. Too hard on them. 2. If there is any water around, they will head that way. We once found a doe that went 100 yards to a creek and lay down near some limbs in the creek and died.
I wish you much luck. I have lost a couple of deer, (no bucks) and couldn't sleep that night!.
Keep us posted.
